Beaten Into Insensibility to save him
from drowning. Mark Brooke, a promt
nent farmer of Alberta, Canada, and i
brother of John Brooke, statistician at
the custom house, was dragged from the
Willamette In front of the Oaks bath
house a raving maniac yesterday after
noon. Walter Hewett saved his life.
Brooke was Incarcerated In the jail at
the Oaks after he had been restored to
consciousness and the sheriff's office
notified, but was later removed to the
home of hla brother, where he now is.
It Is said that Brooke has been suffer
ing from melancholia for some time,
owing to tha death of his wife, and that
he has made frequent attempts to end
hla Ufa, but the effort of yesterday aft
ernoon was the most spectacular and
nearly successful of tha list.
Quarda Watch Kim.
Brooke visited the Oaks yesterday
afternoon in company with a man giving
nls name as William A. La Fayette and
hlB address as the Quimby hotel. Later
search, however, disclosed the fact that
the companion was not known at the
hotel. The two men were quiet and
orderly though Brooke acted In a queer
manner an-d attracted the attention of
the guards at the merry-go-round where
he started to take a ride. It was thought
by the guard that the man was Intoxi
cated, and he was not allowed on the
rnntrlvunnR after whlrh he nnd T .a F"flv-
.ftte walked down to the manager's of-
ilce near tha chutes. Here they sat
down on a bench and rested for some
little time.
Suddenly Brooks Jumped from hi
seat on the bench and taking off his
coat and vest jumped head tlrst Into the
basin at the foot of tffe chutes. The
water in the basin is not more than
three Or four feet deep and he scrambled
to his feet. The policeman on duty at
tha .gate nearby -call ad- to the man to
get out or tne water, wnicn ne aia,
John M. Stedman, tha passenger on
the Harrlman liner, Rosa City, who was
terribly crushed while trying to board
the vessel after her line had been cast
off at Astoria on the way to Portland
last night. Is still alive but In a very
precarious condition.
8 ted man got on board tha steamer
but Captain Kldston stopped tha liner
as soon as possible and, signalling for
a boat, had him taken back to Astoria
for medical care. It was feared tho
man would die on the veSBelvhad he
been taken along to Portland. A dls
oatoh from Astoria at noon today said
that Stedman's chances to recover are
very silgbt. His home la in bonorna,
r-nl and ha Is a member of Foresters
lodge No. 8,922. It is feared that he
sustained serious Internal injuries.
There are no superficial bruises except
ing on the left wrist, where a deep
gash was cut Into the flesh.
The Rose City arrived here this
morning at an early hour. She brought
3(10 first-class passengers and about
50 steerage. Only a few of them saw
Stedman try to board the boat, and they
oorslder it a miracle that he was not
crushed Into a pulp.
According to tho officers and the pas
sengers who saw the accident, Stedman
earne running for the boat after the
bow had begun to swing out from the
dock. Tha stern was being backed up
on a spring line to swing the craft's
head out Into the stream, and one of
the sailors had lowered a cork fender
over the side to break the Impact when
the stern would strike the dolphins at
the end of the dock. Stedman leaped
for the fender and caught It Just as the
steamer's stern bore up against the
dolphin. The fender gave several Inches
until tshe thickness was less than that
of Sfedman's body, and he was almost
flattened jfrom the chest down. It all
happened In a moment before anyone
could interfere.
Stranegly enough Stedman did not re
lease his hold on the rope that sup
ported the fender, but hung on until
given a lift over the side. He retained
consciousness and did not complain, al
though It was plain that he suffered ter
ribly. His face turned black In a few
moments from the blood that had been
crowded to tha head and the eyes
swelled closed. To have stopped the
steamer at thai time would have placed
her In a dangerous position with the
tide running out, and so Captain Kld
fton took her out Into the bay and then
signalled for a launch. The Injured
man was lowered on a stretcher

accident but Stedman himself. Captain

"I was taking a bath," was the an

"That is not the way to taktf a bath,"
was La Fayette's response. "If you want
r bath you will haye to swim clear
across."'
"Sure," said Brooke, making a second
dive into the pond and swimming to the
other side.
Chief of the Oaks police McDonald
had seen' the 'two men from down the
trail a little distance an.l had started
to question the men' when tho secoifd
plunge was taken. He then ran to tha
other side, pulled Brooke from the
water and asked him what he was try

"I am taking a bath." Said Brooke.
"This Is no bath house," said the
chief. "If you want to take a bath
go down to the bath house and get a

"Is there a hath house around here?"
asked Brooke. "I am looking for one,"
he continued, "and I am glad you told
me." Then he started down the board
walk accompanied by La Fayette, who
was carrying his coat and vest.

Brooko made a sudden dash and
captain ruasion sajs? there was no

whistle had been sounded several times
to warn the passengers against being

is now on the other side, having recent

By earning bounty for every mile
traversed and standing a good chance to
pick up a charter to carry wheat bafk
to Europe, it is possible for tho French
sailing vessels to make the long run to
Portland from Europe with even a par
tial cargo of freight, and as a result it
is believed that the season's fleet will

Under the bounty system it is difficult
for other maritime nations to compete
with the French bounty-fed vessels and
they are either tied up or operated at a

SAW SEA LIONS DIVE.
Portland Launch Men Run Close to
Rocks Along Coast.
"Sea lions are fearless high divers,"
said O. F. Graves this morning In relat
ing some experiences a few days ago
when he and a couple other mariners
took Captain Peter Johns' gasoline
launch Rose from this city to Yaqulna
bay, where she Is now carrying excur
sion parties on the bay and out to sea
when the weather permits.
"Running south from the mouth of
the Columbia we skirted the coast close
ly. A short distance below Tillamook
Rock wa discovered the high bluffs in
the water literally covered with ani
mals. Having plenty of time arid being
curious we steered close In and then it
was that we came to discover that the
sea Hobs make high dives and that they
know how to do It,
"The bluffs on the ocean side were
fully 40 feet high. Off these rocks the
lions plunged headfirst as soon us we
came near enough to alarm them. They
were led by one large fellow who must
have welged a ton. They had reached
the ton of the bluff from the Inshore
aids which was not nearly so abrupt."
It took the Rose 14 houra to make the
run from the mouth of the Columbia to
Yaqulna and those who made tha trip
declare It waa Intensely Interesting. The !
weather was Meal the entire trip.

Heppner, Or., July 14. --An approxi

yesterday's ' cloudburst Is Impossible at

before the exact extent can be ascer

damage will not be as serious as was

With soarcely any warning the torrent
of water poured down from the hills
yesterday afternoon, driving Willow
creek out of its bantis and terrorliing
the people, to the majority of whom
the flood disaster of June 14, 1903. Is
still fresh. Practically the entire pop
ulation of the city took to the hills a
soon as the Inundation occurred. In
many Instances thrilling rescues were
made.
Bridges at the upper end of town were
carried away, siaewams ana renous
floated down the street in the swirling
torrent and many houses were partially
wrecked. The electric llgnt plant was
put out or Dusiness ana tne eiygian
darkness added to the misery of the
refugees last night. Today the face of
the city resembles a mud flat. Gar-
en InnTin walks and oorches ara cov
ered with driftwood, debris and several
nches of slime. The town looks as
though it had been slapped over with a
monster brush of black paint.
Mnnv nersona here remember the
catastrophe of 1903 when over 200 lives
were lost and the greater portion of
the city wiped away by the charging
flood from the nearby foothills. Yes

all the symptoms of tha big flood, but

If I were askedftp point out a man in full and perfect Strength, I

more than excite temporary sbtlvtty.
By my system of local treatment I
restore absolutely normal coalltlont
throughout the organs inmoAved,
which promptly results In coonglete
and permanent restoration of
strength and vigor. This trea4inent
is original with me, and is thff only
radical and certain Cure yet detalsed.
Varicocele
Varicocele Is a relaxation, knot
ting and twisting of the most Vital
blood vessels of the organic system.
It stagnates the local clrculatlqs,and
Interferes with the processes i of
waste ana repair. Neglect brrfgs
derangement or functions and lnt-try
to tha general health. Most phfsl
clans resort to surgical operatlns
and hospital treatment. I cure Vari
cocele In one week without opera
tion, pain or detention from busi
ness. My cures are absolutely per
manent and no ill effects whatever
can follow tor treatment.
Contracted Diseases
I hare reduced the time required
for curing contracted disorders
about one half. This is an Important
achievement. It replaces danger
with safety. It forestalls chronic
complications. It removes the in'
feet Ion and Inflammation before that
vital center, the prostata gland, can
becotns Involved. To many men It
"means tho difference between per
fect health aad a lifetime of misery
and functional weakness. My method
la mine alone. My treatment ta
original. In soma features It resem
bles tha ordinary. In results It la
entirely different. It Is safe, prompt
and thorough.
The above, together with Organio
Weakness. Nerve DebilHatloscj. havt
