stat of New York, whose remains hav
lust been removed from the Congres
sional cemetery In Washington to
Kingston, N. T, is one of th very fw
Americans who have had their portraits
on coins. His head appears on the
"George Clinton cent" which Was
struck In New York City In 1787. r
This cent formed part of on of th
currency issues contemplated at this
period, when New York state. Ilka sev
eral of the other states, was endeavor
ing to provide a stable circulating medi
um to replace the motley mass of coins
of all designs and nationalities whl,'h
were then In use and caused incalculable
confusion in the way of fixing values.
On the obverse of the Clinton cent,
which was of the size- of the old-time
copper cent, Is a bust of Governor Clin,
ton facing to the right, and around tha
border is the Inscription "Georg Clin
ton." divided bv two larae stars. Th
reverse shows an oval shield In the cen
ter, with the sun rising behind a rami
of hills.
In the foreground is the sea, while to
the left of the shield Is the figure of
Justice, holding sword and scales. On
the right of theshleld Is the flgur of
liberty with a staff and cap. Above the
shield, on a giobe, stands an eagle, while
below Is the word "Excelsior" and th
date, "1787."'
This interesting ooln, of which only
fialf a dosen specimen are now known,
s held at a very high premium and
ranks with the very scarcest of the
New York cents of this period, soma of
which have brought 3800 and mora Th
dies for the Clinton cent were engraved
by a man named Atlee, to be used by
the firm of Machln & Co, who con-
ducted a private plant at Newburgh, N.
i., ior iuo coinage oi jMew xora coo
per cents. ,
Dies for several varieties of TCew
York cents were cut by Atlee for us
t the same mint. One of these hnrf a.
similar reverse to the Clinton cent, but
on the other side was a large eagle, with
u. i.mieu outies Bruma on ms Dreast
Above the head of the eagl was a ring
of eleven stars, which enclosed two
stars behind the head. Below was th
motto, "E Plurlbus TJnum," nd th
date, 1787." Only two specimens of
this variety are known, one of whlah
brought 2460 at a recent coin sale.
The rarest of the whole series of"
New York state cents shows a standing
figure with a tomahawk In his right
hand and a bow In the left, surrounded
by the Inscription, "Liber Natu Llber
tatem Defendo." The reverse shows sa
eagle standing upon a section of glob,
and the words. "Neo Eboracus Excel
sior " Four of these coin are now in
xlstence, one of which, in very fin
condition, sold for 8350. "
Atlee is credited with still -another
New York cent, supposed to be unique.
j, an rugie on me reverse,
the Inscription. "Neo. Eboracus
Excelsior.'' The bust, on th. nh.
verse, is that of George III, the inscrip
tion reading "GEQRCIUS III. ReaT""
The engravur evidently did not hav a
punch of the letter G. and used that of
C instead
Why this obverse should occur on a
New York cent of 1787 remains vnii.
