Christened by Kiss Ansel.
Governor Ansel of South Carolina was
one of the conspicuous figures on tho
christening stand. The ceremony of
naming the big battleship was per-
lormea Dy trie governor s aaugnter,
Miss Frederlcka Ansel.
It was a few minutes past noon when
the last shores were knocked from the
ways and the colossal vessel began her
brief Journey. Swinging aloft the wlno
bottle, which was clothed with the
tars and stripes. Miss Ansel crashed
It against the steel bow and ottered the
christening words. As the mammonn
.hulk glided gracefully down the greased
cradle, the enthusiasm of the crowd
found vent. To the shouts and che-jrs
of the people was added the din of
countless boat whistles and It was not
until the South Carolina was swung
gracefully to In midstream that the
pandemonium subsided.
After the ceremonies the lnvitod

Armament and Equipment. I
The principal dimensions of the South
Carolina are: Length between perpen
diculars, 460 feet: breadth on loud
water line, 80 feet; mean draft, 24 feet
ffllx inches: normal dlsplaeenient. 16,0t)tt
trms; full load displacement, 17.600
tons:' designed speed on trial at normal
displacement, 18 H knots; horsepower,
17,000; bunker capacity, 2,100 tons.
In addition to a main battery of eight
12-lnch breech-loading rifles, the South
Carolina will be equipped with two sub
merged torpedo tubes and will carry a
secondary battery of 22 3-Inch rapid-
iire guns, two tnree-pounaer semi
automatic guns; eight one-Inch semi-
automat lo guns, two three-Inch field
pieces, and four machine guns of .30
caliber.
The hull will be protected on the
; water line by a complete belt of armor
eight feet wide, having a thickness of
11 inches throughout the machinery
spaces ana iz incnes at tne magazine
spaces. For a height of eight feet
above the main belt there will be the
. casemate armor, eight .inches thick at
the top to ten Inches thick at the bot
tom. There will be a complete pro-
" tectlve? deck from stem to stern. The
magazines and shell rooms will be so
arranged that about one-half of the
total supply of ammunition will be car
ried at each end of the ship.
The propelling engines will be of the
vertical twin-screw, four-cylinder, triple
expansion type, of a combined Indicate
horsepower of 16,600. Each engine will
be located In- a separate water-tight
compartment. Each of the two funnels
of the vessel will be 100 feet high abov
the base line. The crew of the South
Carolina will number 61 officers and
768 men.
The South Carolina and her sister
ship, the Michigan, represent the firm
attempt of United States naval con
structors to build ships of their type.
The object of the designer was to
make craft which carry as many guns
of even calibre as their displacement
will permit. They are nearly as pow
erful as the famous English Dread
naught, their displacement being 16.
000 tons against 17,000 tons of tho
British vessel. Experts are of the opin
ion that the lines along which Uie new
hips have been built will permit them
to fire as many guns broadside as the
Dreadnaught can fire from her five
turrets.
After her trial trip the South Car:
Una will go to Charleston. S. C, where
a great demonstration will be held.
