Correct Names.
There is a movement under wnv to
reform the loose use of the names of
the various resorts on the O. K. & N
railway. The abused name Is the term
Long Beach. It has been used as a
substitute for North Beach to designate
the whole peninsula from Ilwaco to
Ocean Park and to distinguish the wholo
Washington beach from the Oregon re
sort ut Seaside. This use of the name
has had a quite logical origin, as tho
f treat stretch of sand is certainly a long
each. '1'he name is very frequently
used In n less general sense to Include
the bench between Seavlew and Break
ers and Anally it Is used to Indicate
settlement around the Long Beaoh
station. The latter Is the only correct
use of the term. This loose use of tha
name has caused some Inconvenience
among strangers and even among those
familiar with the different meanings of
Long Beach. Persons wishing to go to
the different resorts of North Beach
buy tickets and have baggage checked
to Long Beach in place of Tioga, Cen
tervllle, Seavlew or elsewhere. Often
times they leave the train at Long
Beach and And themselves and their
baggage a considerable distance from
where they want to go. Persons In the
city who have friends at North Beach
direct mall to Long Beach and It goes
to the Long Beach postofflce, when it
may be intended elsewnere.
The correct use of the term Long
Beach is the name of the resort which
was originally cut out of the H. H.
Tinker tract and not the general name
of the 15 miles of North Beach, as the
sound of the name might indicate.
Above Long Beach the first resort is
Tioga, which has the old Jacohsen place
for a landmark. Tioga extends up the
beach to where J. M. Arthur has built
his big hotel called BreaKers. Above
Breakers the stations to Ocean are
seldom confused except with the gen
eral use of the term Long Beach. Be
low Long Beach comes Newton, where
the Newton hotel was Miflt. then Cen-
terville, and finally Seavlem, at the old
Stout place.
