Gordon Company Cuts Con
densed Article to Meet
Price Killing Carnation.
Milk 1h runnlMK In tlio fight between
the Horden Milk company nnd the Pa
cific Coast Condensed Milk company.
Today the Honlen company. throuKh
lis local representative. Johnson-I.le-ber
company, announced a out of 40c a
cane In I lie former price. This would
put the price of Pioneer, the Borden
product, to the same pi-Ice a Carnation,
the Pacific Co;ist manufacture.
However, this He-inn to be merely the
atari (if what promises to he one of the
greatest fights ever made In the dairy
trade for control of a market. A few
days nun when the Hordcn company dis
continued Its! offer of one case of milk
free uilth ench 10 oases nuroliaMcrt, tlio
wise one Hinted tlmt thin was the end
of the fight and that the Horden coni
panv had deserted tho field.
Not no, however, for with the latest
declaration from the company, the ftkhx
promises to e fast ami furious, with
milk sure to well In the futairo at prices
that would not prove profitable to the
canners. Thus today's drop of 4 0c a
ease In -the Horden product seems to
he merely the openlnu wcdiie of the
company's cavalry. The wonder of
the present fipht Is that neither com
pany has to duto been ahle to more
limn fill Its orders, at some periods the
orders belnfr several weeks late, In de
livery because of the press of business.
Therefore the fifcht Is not merely a mat
ter of securing business, but to get no
solute control of the condensed milk
trade of the Paclft" northwest.
Borden May Build Condeneary.
In the fight as it goes on at present,
the Borden company la greatly handi
capped, for it can not produce a suffi
cient amount of the canned milk to
wage a successful fight against the
Carnation people, who have several
factories and are said to be Interested
In others. Two of tho company's plnnis
are In, Oregon In the district where
milk supplies are good. One of them is
at Forest Orove. and the other nt
HUlshoro. Both sre large and modern
plants. On the other hiind the Horden
people have but ono oondensury, that
located at Auburn near Seattle, where
milk supplies are not over- plentiful.
It Is stated for this reason the Borden
company will build nt least one-, nnd
possibly two, rnrulensarles In Oregon,
nnd at this time the east side of the
river between Portlnnd and Salem nro
looked upon as the most favorable lo
cation. It Is stated that a representa
tive of one of the milk companies has
been quietly Interviewing the hop grow
ers of the enst side regarding what
thev would do If a condensary would be
built In their vicinity.
