Port of Portland Makes Rates More
Inviting to Ship Owners.
It will be cheaper to have vessels dry-
docked In Portland after this. At the
regular monthly .-neeung or me fort
of Portland commission it was decided
to . make a general cut In tho rates,
except that tho minimum was raised
from 130 to 140.
The rata for steam tonnage was put
on tho following schedule: Under 1,000
tons. H cents; 1.000 to 2.000 tona, 21
Cents; 2,000 to 4,000 tons. 18 cents; over
4,000 tons, 15 centa. Ball tonnage was
placed at 19 cents for vessels under 600
tons; 17 cents for 1,000 tons, and 16
cents for more than 1,000 tons. Steam
craft go on gross and sail on net ton
nage. Officers for the ensuing year were
elected. The old officials were reelected
to their respective offices. C. F. Ad
ams, treasurer, was placed under $60,
000 bonds, m accordance with the recent
ruling requiring bonus ror an oiricers
handling money.
Engineer Loekwood asked for permls

viewing the work done by the board.
The matter was deferred until tho next
meeting when a complete report will
be made nv the engineer, lie was au
thorized to purchase an additional fuel
cow for the dredges.

Two Forest Service Men Will Leave
Here on the Guernsey.
Nels A. Eckbo and J. McGuffy, con
nected with the forest service of the
United States, wlll leave Portland on
the Norwegian steamer Guernsey when

hai with a cargo of lumber. The
Guernsey carries no passengers, so they
will have to sign on in some capacity.
The travelers are going to describe a
circle around the globe, and Incidentally
study the forests of the various coun
tries on their route. From Shanghai

hftma, Nagasaki and Tokio. From there
they will run down to Calcutta, India,

Sues canal. Then they will take In i
of the European continent and return to
toe states.
Mr.' Eckbo has been stationed on the
pacific coast, while Mr. McQuffy has
been connected with the branch of the
department having headquarters In Montana.

lamook to inspect the Trask hatchery
and make a general survev of the fish
ing Interests. The intention to estab
lish a hatchery and retaining ponds at
Bonneville has been abandoned because
it had been found that to procure a
-water supply would cost Jo.OuO and to.
complete tho plant would cost fullv
115,000 more. No other site for such
a plant has been decided upon, as i' Is
now too late this year to make it avail
able. Mr. McAllister was accompanied
by Walter Rldehalgh of the Elmore
Packing company.
