government aid In checking the rav
age of smallpox, which Is devastating

sea and from the Baltic to Siberia, was
made today by representatives of tho
affected districts. They declared that

tion company, is dead, and J. P. Jef
frey, a capitalist: James Nelson, a
prominent lodge man. and Mrs. Hazel
LlddUl are badly Injured, a the result
of an automobllo aocMent a mile east
of Hayward's last night.
The affair is somewhat mysterious.
It is said there were seven In the
automobile, which was running at high
speed, when a tire burst. The shook
cause.l the wheel to collapse, and the
automobile turned turtle, crushing
Scribner to death.
Nelson is the most seriously Injured
of the survivors, not yet having re
tained consciousness. The names of
the other occupants of the .maohlno
have not been learned.' The accident
was not reported un-tll today.

Cries of "Hobson." "Where's Hob
son f" then came from the crowd, who
recognized that the permanent chairman
was a fellow-statesman of the hero of
the Merrlmac.
As soon as the noise caused by the
Incident had died down, Clayton began
his speech.

of Indiana. Whose motion that a com

ried. Kern, Pace of Alabama and Nor

committee.
Raymond Robhlns of Chicago was
then called to the platform to address
the convention during the Interval. He
made a pro-Bryan speech.
An Oklahoma delegate then demanded
that Martin W. Littleton of New Tnrlr
be asked for an address. This brought
Texas and New York to their feet and
they yelled with delight as Littleton i
moved up to the platform.

short Whatever this convention does,
both as to Its candidate and Its plat
form. New York will stand man to man
for the success of both and fight our
