The improvement In the leather trade
,1b the east continues. Latest reports
from ' the various centers east of the
' Kocktes Indicate that higher prlcea are
still possible.
!. .Tha fact that the manufacturers are
again In the market for hides shows
quit clearly that they have smaller
holdings than had been anticipated. Juat
after the October unpleasantnesa, every
. manufacturer and buyer In the east be
: fan to cry that stocks were burden
v soma and "that prices would go to the
; dors.
Tha result was that raw hides touched
an unusually low f igure and even- then
" manufacturers scarcely cared whether
. they bought or not Thla caused a
. similar condition to rule her.
The great shortage in came ana a re
.' rival of business everywhere has caused
, an unturn in the hide market and a
. further Improvement, in the price la
again noted today. Manufacturers have
V suddenly come to reallro that there are
not enough hides to go around during
a normal market ana una is wni
caused their return Into the buying
arena.
Local buyers are now much eager to
; purchase and the bidding Is quite live
ly considering the conditions which
ruled in the hide market about a month
ago. For the ordinary run of dry hides
the trade Is now freely offering coun
try butchers 12 Ho and 13c a pound. For
green salt they are quoting 6c and 6 He
today and for green calves 8c and 10c
a pound. While there la no change for
the day in kips the market is firmer at
6c and 8e and at 4c a pound for green
salt bull hides.
Wool Market Is Quit Firm.
While trade conditions la the wool
market are not very lively at this time,
. the tone Is oulte steady and prices on
- Willamette valley stock are ruling
"from IZHc to 16c. according to quality.
In mohair there Is but little doing at
- the moment, most of this year s clip be
lnsr already out of first hands. While
trade Is nominal, former advanced
prices are being maintained. Most of
"the late sales in mohair have gone to
speculators who consider the present
market a very good investment. While
conditions this Reason aid not warrant
the extreme high values of late years,
the decline this season-has been far too
great Some of the larger buyers did
not enter the market at all for mohair
this season because of what they con
sldered the ridiculous values being of
fered by buyers and manufacturers.

is a Bligm increase in Huiimies.
Some new clover and valley timothy
hav Is being offered but dealers are
not buying- because of Its "rreennes.
On the board of trade today bidders
cut down their" price on December
