Cooney's Single in Sixth
Shoves "Winning Run
Acrpss the Hate.
Moon, don't rhyme with Groom, I
know,
But It was moons and moons ago
Since we triumphed In the first.
Invariably we've got It worst.
But this time they couldn't kill ur.
Cause we found their pitcher, Willis.
McCredle's Murmurlngs.
For the first time In goodness knows
when the Beavers copped the opening
matinee from the Beals yesterday by a
prolific batting rally in the sixth In
ning, allowing the home, guard to rout
the invaders. Scratch swats, timely
Mffs, peart pegging and glorious fielding
were thrown into the afternoon in great
gobs, keeping the first day fans on the
anxious seat during the entire after
noon. While Groom was unsteady at
limes, he closed up like a big leaguer
when things grew threatening ana par
ticipated In six of the chances of his
colleagues.
Kid Mohler pent Ralph Willis out to
handle the swab. Willis sent his bul
lets fairly true till the sixth when the
northerners charged his position, well,
it ended with Willis being chased In the
next canto In favor of Henley, who of
ficiated for two innings. Willis allowed
four hits In the sixth and the Bpavers
chased two acrosn, Cooney's blngle be
ing responsible for the winning tally.
Groom had the skid sign on the Seals
from the third inning on, presenting In
all seven wallops, some of the scratch
iest order.
To make a long, sweet story short
and spicy, this is about the way things
might be summed up:
i'rsov was ehoneroned to first bv Mr.
Willis, that gentleman's generosity be
ing eagerly accepted by the Pearl. Coo
noy gave him a cheer to help him on
his wav In the shape of a sacrifice.
Buddy Ryan, the Pueblo beauty, did a
dermatnloglrnl stunt on the face of one
of Wlljis' benders and the sphere went
careering through .space to the fence. It
was g-ood for two cushions and Pearl
Srnng up one fare.
' N Double Steal Helps Borne.
Willis winged Kaftery but MeCredle
forced Tom at second. This allowed
Buddy to reach third. A double steal
l.v Rvan and MeCredle allowed the sec-
oiiil score to be lotted down. Bassey
went out from Willis to Williams and
retired the side. , . . ,
The frisky- BenTs got busy m the sec
ond carat o and busier still in the third,
when thev rung up twice. ,..SIelcholr
started things in the second with a
single. Cooney's error of Curtis' infield
swat moved Melch up a notch. Groom
soaked McArdle on the anatomy and
Claude Berrv enme through with a long
high fir which allowed Melcholr to
come home. Curtis 'was caught nap
ping at third on one of the prettiest
plava of the day, n swift relay from
fJroom to Madden to Ryan, making the
third out.
Groom's wlldness -was responsible for
the other brace of runs In the third
Inning. He walked Hlldehrand and scol
der In succession and Williams' single
filled the bases. Melcholr conned a
timely two bagger and scored Hllde and
Holly. All three men on the bases ca-me
home on the hit, but t'mplre O'Connell
sent Williams back to third because the
ball went -into the crowd in the left
field. The two blnglers died on the
bags because Curtis went out on a foul
flv to Danzig which carried the big
first baseman into the wire netting, cut
ting his hand.
Cooney on the Job.
With matters standing thus: MeCredle
'came to bat In he sixth. A serntch hit
placed him on first and he reached third
on Johnson's corking double, Ote hav
ing replaced Danzig at first after the
lafter's Injury. Madden scored his man
ager with a pretty single. Groom's in-
rieid Dump was responsible ror me

Not satisfied with getting the husband
she wanted and one of her children to
keep, Mrs. Campbell, erstwhile Mrs.
John McDonald till the courts freed
her from an obnoxious union, has vested
herself with new rights and uncere
moniously spirited away the daughter
who was left in the custody of the
father.
Result The girl Is gone, none knows
whero; the father has entered upon a
protracted spree, from tne murk of
which only one clear idea crystallizes
Itself that he must follow the mother,
run down her husband and hand him
over to the authorities. But that this
would be a difficult matter for a
drunken man with no money does not
occur to him in the fever of the mo
ment. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald's life together
was a bumpy one. lie liked drink and
she liked men. Finally she decided
she liked a man named Campbell better
than she did her husband and she
straightway went away with him.
McDonald followed thorn through
California and New Mexico and caught
them in Arizona. He procured a di
vorce and two of the children and she
was given the younger son. The other
eon remained with his father, but
roamed t..e streets too freely and finally
he was taken away from the father and
flven to a family in Montavllla to care
or. The daughter Hazel, aged 12 years,
was the only child he had left and he
left her with friends, Mr. and Mrs. H.
Hints, to care for.
Money Zs Shy.
Hints works for the East Bide Slab
Wood company and is not rolling in
wealth. He Uvea in rooms over the
compan-'s barn. They were glad of
the extra sum promised them for tho
girl's koep, some $12 a month. But It
never appeared. ,
The father forgot to bring the money
and the girl stayed on. After some live
or six months the father took her away
and for a year she stayed at several
different homes. Three months ago
McDonald asked Hintz again to take the
child, and offered nim pay. Miniz,
making a virtue of necessity, good
naturedly agreed to keep her for noth-
fier mother meanwhile was working
In Vancouver and had married camp
bell. A week before the Fourth she gave
up her work there and about the same
time the girl was one day accosted, on
Union avenue by a strange man In
shabby tramp clothes. He told her his
name and asked her to meet him at the
same place the morning of the Fourth,
saying he had a watch and some money
he wished to give her. He explained
his shabby appearance by saying that
he had run awav from prison and wore
such clothes- that he might not be
recognized. This McDonald Bays is
true; that he knew the man to be an
escaped convict some time ago.
When Hazel told the story at home
Hintz Immediately told her father and
he forbade her being allowed to go out
on the Fourth. The child cnarea a
great deal but obeyed. Yesterday after
noon about 2 o'clock Mr. and Mrs. Hintz
were in the neighborhood of East Sixth
street and Grand avenue looking for a
house to rent.
Little Olrl Disappears.
They sent Hazel around the corner to
Inquire of neighbors about the owner
and she never came back. They looked
for her on the street and at home and
the police were notified. But no trace
was- found. McDonald quit work at
the Peterson stables where he is em
ployed and In his grief resorted to his
customary cure-all. Mr. and Mrs. Hintz
were deeply worried and feared they
would be held responsible.
This morning a letter rnme from the
mother mailed at Station B In Portland.
She said she had the child and would,
keep her; that she waa'Just leaving for
the north; and that he should by rights
have had the child anyway; that the
court had trlven Hazel to her on con
dition that she could support her, which
freely Since then. She had often told
him that she would not leave her
father to go with her mother, because
her father waa the one that had taken

the mother has any right to the child.

In my very extensive practice I have
learned a few truths that are undeniably
of interest to every man. First of all, I
find that the very serious and so-called
"incurable" cases are due usually to NEG

many men suffer FOR YEARS and prac

EVER trying to cfbse themselves with

NO TREATMENT AT ALL is what
"cheap" treatment means in nine cases out

than the first. Just before you go a line
further in this announcement, stop and ask
yourself as to whether YOU are following
in the foolish footsteps of the man who
NEGLECTS himself? Are You trying to
cure yourself with nostrums? Are YOU
looking for treatment that will not cure?
