'The dedication of the new Catholic
orphanage near Oswego will be made
hy Archbishop .Christie tomorrow. Sol
emn high mass will be celebrated at 8
o'clock and the building will be blessed.
A large crowd Is expected to - be pres
ent. The orphanage was Just recently
finished at a cost of nearly $76,000 and
is one of the finest of its kind in the
west.
An "excursion will start from the
Tavlor street dock at 10:30 Saturday
morning' for Morey's landing, near
where the, orphanage is situaiea. uov-
ernor Chftnberlaln will deliver the ad
dress at the patriotic celebration, which
will be held at tne orpnanage. several
thousand people are expected to visit
the institution on the Fourth and take
part in trua exercises.
The substantial proor or ine enuriu
put forth during iov ana !, 10 giva
a home to the orphan girls or ma arcn
dloceso will bo seen by those who will
visit the new institution on the occa
sion of the dedication services tomor
row. -
The plans of the orphanage were made
by Alfred Breltung, architect, Seattle;
the superintendent and general con
tractor was D. F. Campbell Sr., of St.
Mary's cathedral parish. The dimen
sions of the building are 142 by 66
fefet. It is four stories high, built of
red brick.
On the baslment floor are the kitchen,
pantries, dining-rooms, playrooms, sewing-rooms,
linen-rooms and baths. The
second floor has the chapel, parlor, of
fice, two suites of private rooms, class
rooms, sewing-room and lavatories. The
third and fourth floors are devoted to
aleeplng-room s.
Extensive verandas on the north and
south ends of the building are supplied
with winding stairways to be used as
fire escapes. The building is heated "by
steam, lighted by electricity and sup
plied with water through the compressed
air system. A series of call bells and
fire alarms Is ,to bo found on every
flopr. A laundry constructed of brick
will serve as the power station for the
home, and for tne provincial house of
the Sisters of the Holy Names, which
will probably be built on the same
"tract in the near, future. Outside in
firmaries have been provided for the
care of children having contagious dis
eases. .
Iii the construction of the building.
Sanitation has received marked atten
tion; the location Itself insures health,
but this will be fiirther promoted by
the system of ventilation, lighting and
seweratre. It has been estimated that
150 children can be comfortably accom-
motiatea in ine new nome. (
His grace, most reverend archbishop',
superintended the drawing of the plans
and has kept closely in touch with ev
ery detail of the work, the success of
which he has had so closely at heart.
It is a meet coincidence that the dedi
cation of St. Mary's home should occur
within the samo week as the celebra
tion of the tenth anniversary of his
grace's episcopal consecration. '
