The Portland board of trade win be

Preparation for the lnltltal session
under the new rules hava been com
pleted after week of active work on
the part of Secretary Fred Muller and
Assistant Secretary Reed.
Among the grain Interests, the proj

.Applications for membership , are com-

th. hnsrrl.' These anruica-
tlons are coming from every part a of
he Paclflo elope, ' Someare noiea
from southern California. . Others from
northern Washington and still others
im lAahn Doints. A large number
of these applications will be acted upon
by the committee at Its next meeting.
Membership "Will Cost More. .
It has been practically decided that
more money will be charged for mem
berships hereafter. While no official
action has thus -far been taken In the
matter, all interests' agree that the
110 Joining fee Is far too small for
the benefits Incurred and the general
opinion is that the charge should be
not less than $50. Others are talk
ing of putting It at $100 but It a
thought that the former sum will rule
until such a time as . the exchange
frows to such an extent that a fee of
100 would be advisable. ;
Will Trade In September DsHTsry.
September will be the first ; deliv
ery month under the new trading on
the board of trade but December op
tion will likewise bei traded In on the
name day. The option trading on the
local board will at first lnolude only
wheat, barley and oats but at a later
date mlllstuffs will be Included.
. For wheat trading the quotations
will be per bushel as at present, while
for oats end barley the basis will be
per ton. , While San Francisco. does its
jrraln trading in centals the local Aioard
adopted the old method whlclf , had,
heretofore been -In 1 vogue amonr local
dealers. ' It is ; quite likely however,
that in the not distant future, option
trade here will be carried on by cen
tals because that is the basis of trade
in foreign markets as well in Cali
fornia, where a larger per cent of, our
grain goes.

Salmon Run Is
Doing Better
The run of olueback salmon In, the
Columbia river is greatly lnoreased and
latest reports from the lower river in
dicate that a muoh larger number of
steelheads are . being caught Prac
tically all, the bluebacks are being
hipped to -the fresh fish markets and
for this reason the price is down lc
a pound to 8o today. - The price ' of
steelheads has only, dropped He to 8Hc
because of the very heavy demand for
that fish. Chinook run is still limited
but the price is down le because of the
heavier arrivals in other lines of sal
mon. .Packing of ' salmon, while not
very lively, is about up to last year"

HIGHLY RECOMMEfiDED
. Special Plptch to The Joornal.)
Spokane, Wash. Jane 80. That It
would be better for the farmer to
market their grain in bulk, is the opin

Washington state grain commission
He sums up the cost as follows:.
At the thresher, in sacking, there is
a sack-Jigger at $3 per day -and two
sewer at 84.60 per day each, making 212
per day. If 2,000 bushels were threshed
in a day, it would cost at the rate of

cost would be saved if tha vhont
were run into a wagon or bin through
a spout from the machine. -
Mr. Reed advocates for a bin a largo
galvanized tank, fixed with a top to
keep out rain. It being made of iron,
there would be no donger of fire dam
aging the grain.
- On wheat thus stored the farmer
saves the following items: Storage, for
he need not haul it to the railroad until
ha la,, ready; no 'insurance, because the
rain cannot burn-in tanks: no posai
illty of stock getting into the field and
damaging the sacks and grain; the use
of the field for pasture as soon as the
thresher pulls out; no damage by rain
before hauling; hauling can be -done at
times when the teams are not em
ployed at other work.

Hawaiian-American Liner Dae Here
Tomorrow From Seattle.
The Hawaiian-American liner Ne
braska is due to arrive here tomorrow
from Seattle, having left that port last
fni xor tne uoiumma river,
he Nebraskan comes to Dick uo some
rrelgnt ror shipment to New lorn by
way of the Tehauntepeo railroad across
the Isthmus, so It is said. No definite
advices have been received here by the
company's agent as to whether or not
the line will send regular steamers her
in the future, and he has no definite in
formation concerning the future move
ments of the Ne bras Kan.
The Hawaiian-American line, ha
long been urged to place Portland on it
route, but so far this has only been
done in one or two instances. The last
time one of the company steamers
waa sent hers waa when the Matson
Navigation eompany of San Francisco
placed the Huonian on tne run between
rortiana ana uonoiuiu wun : tne mien,
tlon of building ud a permanent line.
The Hawaiian-American line sent
one of its steamers here at that time
and. promised more, but no sooner, had
the Hilonlan been taken off the run
than the Hawaiian-American liners also
failed to show up. A rew flays ago a
rumor was reported to the effect that
the Matson Navigation company intends
having its large and new steamer pur
lins call at Portland on her way to and
from Honolulu, and It is now believed
that possibly this is responsible for the
XNeDrasKan coming nero at vuis uiue.
