Two large oil-carrying steamers, ths

former towing a big three-masted steel
barge also laden . with oil. arrived at
the tanks at Portsmouth this morning:.
The Rosecrans towed the targe stern
on with a heavy steel wire hawser.
Greater quantities of oil are being
brought to Portland each month on the
dosen or more of tank steamers that
ere regularly employed in the oil trade
or me jfacirio coast. - -ine nonmi
and Colonel E. Drake each having ca
cao! tv for about 40.000 barrels of Oil.
Other visitors here In the oil trade
are the Santa Rita, Roma, Atlas, Asun
cion. Maverick and S. V. Porter. The
barge Monterey is occasionally towed
here by the powerful tug Dauntless.
In addition to this there are a half
dosen numbered barges kept in con'
stunt eommlftalon.
This Immense oil traffic has devel
oped ' during the past few years. Ten
years ago an oil tank steamer was un
known to this port and .there were no
large tanks along the river for the re
ception of the immense shipments of
toaay. in - those oaya - tne ou - was
brought here by rail. The great in
. crease in the demand for oil Is due al
together to the fact that most power
craft plying out of here have discarded
the use of wood or coal for the liquid
fuel which is much easier to handle, a
rreat deal cleaner and not nearly as
ouikv.
The next oil tank steamer due to ar
rive here is the Asuncion, Captain Brld-
Sett The Asuncion and the Atlas are
le pioneers in the trade on this coast.

Shipbuilders' Association Holds
Semi-Annual Sleeting Here.
The Paclflo Coast Shipbuilders' asso
ciation held Its first semi-annual meet
, lng at Oregon hotel Saturday night and
discussed matters of general Interest
to the Industry. President John Und
strom of the Lindstrora Shipbuilding
company, Aberdeen, presided.
Secretary J. F. Matthews of the Mat
thews Shipbuilding company, Hoqulam,
reported that a number of new mem
bers had Joined the association since
Its organization in June, so that now
about 30 firms' are represented.
. The question of paying $1 extra per
day for municipal or government work
was discussed at length until it was
finally decided that no differential
should be allowed; that all work should
be regarded alike, and eight hours to
constitute a working day. This matter
came up largely because of the strike
that occurred at Joseph Supple's yard
In this city a few days ago when the
ship carpenters quit because Mr. Supple
refused longer to pay them $5 a day for
work sent in bv the Port of Portland
while they would do similar work for
private individuals for $4 per day. Ths
association's decision backs up Mr. Sup
ple. It was also agreed that henceforth
applicants for work must fill ' out
blanks similar to those used In securing
positions In the navy yards.
Speaking of business conditions Sec
retary Matthews said that the outlook
for work this summer is ss good as
last year, which means that' It is quite
encouraging. He said there 1s more re
pair work going on than new work be
cause shipowners are having' a good op-
portunlty to have their vessels over
hauled while business is rather alack.
The next association meeting will be
i held here in January next, but men
tion was made of possibly holdjng the
, June meeting of 1909 In Seattle when
the fair is on there.
