' ' President Josselya, of the Portland
Railway, Light & Power company, says
that the sensational raising of rates by
the insurance companies is nothing but
a holdup game and is not warranted.
The - insurance companies raised the
rates on the ground that the dlrect-elee-

- motors is dangerous. Mr. Josselyn cays
' this Is true only of sections subject to
electrical storms and Portland is exempt
from these.. If the railway company Is
forced to put in alternating . currents
Immediately in place of the direct ones
now In use this action, will cause a big
. loss to all owners of electric motors for
machine or elevator power, as every

MLNISTEE WHO
STRIKES TO KILL
That there are scores of hideous dev
ils parading in society each day is the
belief of Dr. Edwin Southers, the inim
itable "Florida Crocker." He says: "I
would not willfully or maliciously
cause my fellow being one sigh of
grief, one touch of misery, or one throb
of pain, but I wish to destroy those
devils of hypocrisy, selfishness, greed,
vice, slovenly, pride, falsehood, eta.,
which cause humanity to become Inhu
man. Therefore I strike to kill.
Dr. Southers lectures at the Chautau

are "If I Were the Devil," and "The

The Libel Vill. Be Resented
An Outrageous Falsehood That Appeared In Yister-
day's Spectator" Will Be Taken Into Court
An outrageous and scandalous falsehood respecting the Butte Boys
Consolidated Mining Company appeared in a weekly publication emanating
from a room in the Chamber or Commeice yesterday, in which it was
stated that the Butte Boys "has no lease whatever on the Goldfield Flor
ence, and its impudent assertion it made to deceive the public." The name
of the sheet publishing
THIS BALD AND WICKED LIE
Is the "Spectator." and for weeks is has been slandering not only this but
every other company engaged in the mining business in this city, without,
we believe, an exception, save one that saw fit to be "induced - to adver
tise in its seemingly worthless columns. We say seemingly worthless, be
cause we believe that its circulation is so infinitesimal that use of its col
umns as an advertising medium would amount to little less than larceny of
tne mbney of our stockholders, to whom every dollar we receive for the!
sale of shares belong, and wno expect tnat we win wisely employ, tnelr
funds and not practically donate them to every mediant or applicant that
comes along.
WE HAVE TWO LEASES ON THE PROPERTY OF THE GOLD
FIELD FLORENCE,
One dated May 1, and made to the Florence Central Mining Company, and
on June 2, with the consent of the Goldfield Florence Miniig Company,
transferred to the Butte Boys Consolidated Mining Company, which had
amalgamated with the Florae ..Central or, rather, had taken over all that
company's interests. Another lease, dated June 13, on an entirely separate
tract of Florence Goldfield ground, is in our possession, and is the property
of the Butte Boys Consolidated-Mining Company, and these documents
may be seen at any time by any interested person at the company's office,
517 Lumber Exchange. building. .:
NOTICE IS THEREFORE GIVEN, THAT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
LEGAL ACTION WILL BE TAKEN AGAINST THE
PUBLISHERS OttflTHE SPECTATOR.
It will then be seen if legitimate, honest, square dealing in the develop
ment of gold mines may thus be willfully, wickedly and maliciously at
tacked by persons of the character of those two individuals who pose as
sponsors for the weekly publication known as the "Spectator."
