Raa tha board of governor of the
Portland Commercial club bean buncoed
Into eanoeUlne; tba lease bald by F. 3D A.
Bouthilller on. the room leased by him
for a saloon T This la tha atoiy which
la now floating- about among commercial
dab members. It la aaid that In order
to do thla tba name of John Conrad wai
Injected into tba controversy, eome good
preaa agent atunta were turned looae
and tha effect was aa desired,
Aroused by tne name of John Conrad
and the Pullman cafe, tba board of gov
ernors haa met and employed an attor
ney to break tha lease. Owing to the
many safeguards thrown .about tha tn
atrument whan It waa drawn it will be
easy to cancel, different membera of
tha board aey, and the action will ba
taken at tba next meeting of tha board.
Why tba Biatnxbanoa,
' Tba story told about how tba commov
tlon concerning the proposed saloon In
tha building waa atlrred ia an Interoat
ing one and haa gained a good (leal of
credence in commercial club circles dur
ing the paat day or so. A year ago.
during last July or August, the small
room was leased to F. X. A. Bouthilller
to ba used aa a saloon. At' the time
Hothchild - Brothers stood sponsor for
the applicant for the lease, signing a
bond to make good the rental in tha
vent that the lessee could not meet the
payments. ; 'a". ,, .""
The lease was for a term of five years
' and was at the rate of tl75 a month.
This rental waa a topnotch fisure for
a saloon, and la one that could not ba
afforded by any other class of business
jvhtett.;mKWL.avput In the space.
t - .' The lessee may have found that ha
? would have a bard time to meet the ex
Vpenaea of tha place, and his bondsmen
may have consequently come to the
I conclusion that they bad a white ele
l phant on their hands. It "was supposed
that the club would be adverse to giv
ing up the contract, because of the high
rental stipulated In the lease and for
that reason it was decided to bring
; John Conrad into play. Some innocent
newspapers may have been "roped In"
to auDDort the clay.
According to the game, the license
of the Pullman cafe waa transferred to
the Commercial Club building in the
name of C. P. O'Meara, known to be
, simply a blind for Conrad in his oper
ation oi me uaer street piace.
Transfer Causes Trouble.
The fact of the transfer waa then
stirred up systematically and had Its
expected effect of rousing the board of
governors to action. This action waa
taken at a meeting held- On Thursday,
when (X A. Boil was selected to break
: the lease. The game appeared to work
, veil, if game It waa 8! nee then no
further action haa been taken, no meet-
jng of tha' board of governors having
. been held, but it is stated- by different
members of the board that there will
be no saloon allowed in the butldlnsr.
It ia expected that the next meeting of
Tne ooard wtu oe neia early tnia weeic,
when definite action will be taken.
Xt la not believed by different mam---bar
of - tha Commercial dub that
OlCasra aver could have operated . a
alooa la tha building, aa there waa m
pTO-visioa In tha leas given W Bout
fclUler tot uhlettiag tha place.
The lldensa being in ' the name of
O'Meara and not transferable, - could
rot bave been used by the lessee, no
i that In reality there does not seem' to
have been much danger of Conrad hav
ing aecured a foothold in the Commer
cial Club building. . - '
It would appear, therefore, that 'the
board of governor had been bunkoed
: Into deciding to cancel tha lease in Una
with the desire of the lessee and Ji la
bond em an by the use of John Conrad's
. giama and "unsavory reputation" aa - a
?ort of red flag to wave in the faoa of
ha authorities of the organisation. -
