Spokane, Wash., June 27. Gene Sulli
van, the crack Butte amateur, signalized
his debut Into tha professional ranks
last night by fighting Kid Scaler, the
Spokane lightweight, to a standstill
and earning a clean cut draw In mix
rounds. " Barring the constant clinching;
the fight was a good one." Sullivan
made a good impression in his first big
mill, and the crowd was with him aU
the time.
Scaler showed ur SDlnndidlv: but he
was hissed when ha allowed himself to
be coached continually from his corner.
Scaler probably landed oftener than the
Irish boy, but the heavy wallops of the
oionianan more man maae up ror wis.
In the fifth inning; Scaler tried to end
the mill, and In his foroe1 flarhtina
drove Gene to the ropes several times.
Sullivan was cool, however, and cov
ered up admirably. His left jab wor-
ried Scaler considerably and hrourht the
claret from the kid's nose. : A couple of
iraigni ngms , rouna loagment in
Scaler's ontica and those lm no riant
members are swollen and black today.
Considerable money was bet on tha
fight, and while there was some dissat
isfaction over the decision, a majority
of the spectators coincided with the
.referee.1''
Sullivan stated that morning that he
was ready to fight Scaler again any
time the kid felt ready. After a few
more rignts in tne north ha win ro
south to California to take on soma of
the good men there. His draw with so
good a second rater as Scaler makes
his friends highly elated over bis future
