Perhaps It ' was only a . midsummer
night's dream, some Juna vision con
ceived to fret the minds of the child la
bor commission, some mischjef-maklng
elf la scheme of Puck's, but, whatever
It was, it was very lovely and you'll all
want to go and see It. Now. all French
governesses have a story that Is very
nice -to hear on rainy evenings before
you are tucked into bed. It Is that on
one night In the year all the dolls in
Paris and, of course, other cities, too,
where-: is more than one doll shop,
come to life, their joints become lim
ber, voices mellow, and they have
dances and sing and play games and
flirt and fall down and bump their
heads, and it hurts just like real peo
ple. . This lasts until 4 o'clock, and
thoiv as the clock begins striking, ev
ery doll scurries back to. his place or
her place, climbs upon the shelves,
tracks herself neatly Into her pasteboard
case and nobody : knows the dif f erencj
but the fairies, and they won't tell. -
But somebody must have told some
time, because they are all at the Heilig
- all the dolls you ever saw -or heard
of, dancing and pretty and full of life
and they talk with real voices,-but they
cannot be actors becaune they , never
forget their lines -and they don't quarrel
over the spotlight.- There were more
than 100 of them, rag dolls, boy dolls.
Dutch dolls, a French doll, and a queen
doll who was so cunning, with such
flaxen hair and such dimpled arms and
Cheeks that nobody was quite certain
whether Peggy Boyer wpi,4 doll or a
girl of a fairy who lent herself for the
occasion only. -- ,
Last night's dolls were so exceeding
ly well tramea mat to those in the au
dience at least not a break in the per
fect action of the choruses, the dances
and the sextettes was visible. Miss
Margaret Martin, who has had ths
training of the children in charge has
so remarkable an understanding with
her classes- that there wasn't even a
sign of panic throughout the evening.
If anyone seemed In danger of forget
ting his next speech he looked down at
Miss j Martin, secured a reassuring
smile, and all was well again.
We don't want ,to encourage profes
sional Jealousy among the dolls by
mentioning some and forgetting others,
but some 150 names are clearly impos
sible to reproduce, so paying our com-
fitments to the choruses as a whole,
he self-possession and ease shown by
Winnie Lewis, who played the Paris
doll, must be commended. Never for
an Instant did she lose her cue or stum
ble over a situation. George Biles faced
the embarrassing situation of being the
only boy on the stage through many of
the tehoruseswtth an equamimity that
was remarkable, and danced and acted
with unusual grace.- .And Ellaabeth
Malboeuf, who Is the littlest of the
three lady dolls well, you should see
Elizabeth If you want to see the final
word in a 'child who is perfectly at
home on the stage. J; A. McHolland
played - the part of the Toymaker with
sympathy, Phelps Carson was excellent
as Dr. Flllaly, who mends dolls, feeds
pills to st.k children and replaces miss
ing sawdust. Cassia Illlfyer was a
sweet .and motherly -little child and
SanEherwl.doU Dt" song, very
prettily. The three Fops were excel
itnt,Lhe Hours. -the Japs, the Fairies,
the French dolls and the Noah family
were all good, and so were the Dutch
dolls, the Gingerbread men, the tin and
the wooden soldiers, the military band
and the marines, the candy doUs, in
very fetching red and white stripes and
the i Jacks-in-the-Box, whose , training
hust have been no easy task.
