Thomas Green, chairman of the co

to the Tongues of Flame meetings. It
is understood that Green's visit was
at the request of Mayor Lane, upon
whom urgent pressure Is said to have

After tha conference Chief Grits

PORTLAND PROSPECTS.
Ellas Brong, of tha Brong-Steele Oom
; paay, Sack From East,
Ellas Brong, president of th Brong
Steele company, large realty broker
of this city, has been traveling in east
ern and southern states for upwards
of six weeka He waa accompanied on
his trip by his wife. Both return to
Portland better satisfied than ever to
make It their permanent boma "There
are many very beautiful places," said
Mr. Brong yesterday, there are many
progressive towns, but Portland 'as a
city and Oregon as a state are unex
celled in the union. I found on my
trip that this city is now well known,
whereas a few years ago comparatively
few were aware that Portland was on
the map. Th civic pride shown the past
few months in Portland is something
that should be encouraged. It will
do much more good than the most im
aginative dreamer can forecast. I
found cities no larger than Portland
which are spending vast sums of money
to overcome drawbacks that wa would
certainly consider insurmountable. The
residents of Portland are Justified la
having much more faith In the ad
vancement of pronerty values than they
have. Don't you know a person can
buy a piece of property in any direc
tion from the center of Portland and
make money on It. Of course there are
advantages to be had by considering
the trend of the city. I know of not
able Investments that will be made in
property around this city that will
mean much to every property holder of
the city. .Doubtless other agents are
in touch with influences that will great
ly enhance the values of real estate.
Be of -good cheer, you will live on the
bright side of life if you buy property
and. make your future home here."

Owing to the fact that the Columbia Woolen Mills Company, is over
stocked with material for Summer Suitings, I am forced to adopt strin
gent and strenuous' methods to dispose of them. There are two reasons
for making the offer below. First, my stock of Fall and Winter goods will
be the largest and most complete ever sliown in Portland. These goods
are on the way and I simply must make room for them. That reason
ordinarily, would be sufficient. Second, I have in my employ a corps of
skilled tailors, cutters, fitters and others that I must keep at work. They
have established the reputation of Columbia Tailoring and have earned
permanent employment. Therefore to make room for the Fall goods and
to tzeep my men busy, I am willing to suffer all the loss entailed in this
offer and give you the entire gain. To this end I will knock off
Off the regular price of every piece of goods on display in my store. This
includes all of my finest woolens, worsteds, every single pattern; in
cludes the finest workmanship and the regular high standard of fit and
comfort for which the Columbia Shop has stood sponsor for the years it
has set the pace in Portland. There is only one satisfactory way to know
what bargains you will get. That is to call and inspect the goods and
prices that are involved in this voluntary .sacrifice. This is an unusual
move for me to make and when I advertise a special offer, you know that
it is worth looking into.
