Los Angeles, June 20. Freddl Welsh
and Fscky JlcFarland are the centers
of attraction ' In the puglllstto world
right now, and when, thef meet on the
Fourth? of July to Jim Jeffries' 'big
arena at Vernon, right rans au over
the country Will eagerly watch for the
result of the battle.; - ' '
'To alUntcnt and purposes the boys
will fight for . the lightweight cham
pionship of the world. f Joe Gana who
retains the title at present, -is getting
into the Methuselah class every day,
and almost anv time some aood. strong
young fellow with plenty of heartland
lots of speed and cleverness will come
along and cop the- old master. Either
McFarland or Welsh la considered ca
pable of doing It eshould the chance
come, and it is highly probable that the
winner of the July 4 mill will have the
honor...... 'V v -
While tne rans .tnrougnout ins .coun
try do rot know very much' about
Welsh, there Is no denying the English
boy's' class. Little by little he' has
rorgad to the front In the lightweight
ranks, and on Decoration Day he showed
so much ppeed and cleverness in dispos
ing of Phil Brock that Jeffries imme
diately recognized hla worth and signed
him with McFarlurid.
The Enalish lad has been in the" swat
business a few years, but most of hla
time was spent around Phiiaoeipnia and
through the eust In six-round affairs.
Then slowly but surely develooed the
cpeed and acipnee In him, and when he
chum weft ' to go "over a longer route
Freddie was fully able to handle him
self and his opponents, v
' McrarUnd -Knrsed" Along."
Since he hooked up with Harry Gil-
more Jr., aa hia manager, McFarland
has been cleverly "nuraed" along with
a view to making him cnampion oi mo
world. He waa gradually sent to tne
front, and not until the last few months
was he allowed to tackle anything of
Importance In the lightweight line. But
h.slnnltir with a. meetlna with Freddie
Welsh over iha 10-round rOUte In Mil
waukee be waa sent against tne top
notchera. and nothing but the English
boy atanda In his way to- the title of
white lightweight champion of the
world. '
So now the Issue Is to be faced
squarely, and whoever Is returned vic
tor either through Jim Jeffries' verdict
or a knockout punch administered his
opponent, will be proclaimed champion
of the whites and clearly in line to suc
ceed Gans. . .
Welsh is attracting more than his
share or attention through his peculiar
methods of training. He has located
his camp at Venice or America, tne
noted reHort on the Paciflo ocean, a
few miles from Los Angeles, and there
he and his staff of training partners
entertain large crowds of summer vis
itors aaiiy. rreauie is irwu' lout
of the water, - and each morning he
take a lone? swim straight out to sea.
sometimes accompanied by his sister
Kate, who is also an expert paddler.
McFarland's camp is located at Jack
Doyle's 8outh, Side club, and the stock
yards wonder goes through a hard grind
there every day. He Is nearly down to
flgnting trim, and each man promises
to enter the ring In superb condition.

An appeal has been taken from the
