,If you ask Mr. Holman which roses
ar the best, to grow here, he will tell
you; all you .have room for. . He has
himself about 500 bushes but If he had
a farm he would have It full of rosea.
And if you ask what he is working
toward he will tell you. "Nothing, ex
cept the pleasure of working with them
and the wholesome Joy . that one gets
out of it" and that being a lover of
his city and proud of the title of Rose
City which it has acquired, he enjoys
preparing this, exhibition, of roses that
people may learn the names of vari
eties -and be ' stimulated '. to turn ' rose
cuiturists themselves., t ,..., tV; ;'.
'. i. Hsay HoUWs Types, :f
There are, some roses, however, which
grow here with better results than can
be obtained in other places. ' and one
of these is our much heralded Caro-'
line Testout, of which some gorgeous
examples In a tall vase grace the -center
of one of the tables. Another is
the climber, Madame Alfred Carriers,
of which Mr." Holman has one bush So
feet high and another 40 feet high, and
both still going. - It blooms freely and
perfectly here and la grown.
beautiful roses carefully arranged In
exhibit boxes, each' with its tulje of
Water, so that the . flowers are pre
served, a Mr. Holman's largest, roses
are placed in one box which contains
a" large deep pink rose .labeled Un
known, a fine Mrs. Myles Kennedy,
white faintly tinged- with pink; a
marvelous Frau Karl Druschki, a
Testout, a J..B. Clark and. a Bessie
Brown. These are all of remarkable
size and perfect in shape and color.
Rose Without Name.
The unknown rose, ' Mr. Holman
explains, he has had for some time,
but he has found no one to identify
it. He has at last succeeded In send
ing buds to the Dlcksons, the noted
roaarlans. near Belfast, who will
perhaps he able to give it a .came.
.. The Winnie Davis is, a new rose
Of which Mr. Holman has A-fine ex
ample. It ia a Jong slender bud, of
Ith only
mediocre results .elsewhere. -.
v tio handsomer rose is shown, to the
taste of most people, than the beauti
ful creamy white Frau Karl Druschki,
of which several notable examples are
shown. This rose is a perpetual won
der to eastern people and there -are
crowds of admirers about these several
examples all day long.
At the exhibition of the National Rose
society of Great Britain held about a
year ago, the following were accorded
gold medals, and a gold medal from
the national society, as Mr. Holman
explains, means not the best of its class
at tha . time of exhibition but a. high
degree of perfection. Thess were the
Erfze winners: Best hybrid tea. Dean
ole; best hybrid perpetual, Frau
Druschki; beat tea, Madame Jule
Graveau (a climber).
Another novelty here Is the new Irish
rose, KUlarney, of which Mr. Holman
shows a specimen. It is not large but
of beautiful shape and a clear pink.
Knob Interest in Hew Ones.
There Is always Interest in deep red
roses, for they are unsurpassed for
brilliant effect. Mr. Holman shows
some fine ones; the Gloire de Bourg
la Relne Is large and of clear coloi ;
a rich one is Xavler Ollbo which is
very satisfactory because of its free
blooming; another is the Captain Hay
ward, which bears the unusual reputa
tion of doing well in partial shade.
Another fine red rose Is the Liberty,
from which the Richmond was derived.
It Is of the same fiery color that, makes
the Richmond so much' admired and
furnishes a succession of bloom which is
desirable. . ,
A striking rose is the Improved Rain
bow which has delicate pencillngs of
red upon its .pink petals.
There Is always more to learn about
roses,, and interested roes growers at
well as those who hav only' aspira
tions in that line are enjoying fully
Mr. Holman's rose show.

Emancipation of the Fat Folks
To have to sit through the hot

to breathe simply because one is so

Large Audience Hears .Dr.
. Brougher's Discourse on
;; . Man's Curiosity.-'
Dr. W. B. KHey of Minneapolis, Min
nesota, will preach at. the White Tem
ple tonight lnt night a' large audl
enca was present to hear Dr. Brougher
discuss the subject, "Man's Curiosity
Is It Greater, than Woman r At the
close - of t the service Mr. .Martin sang
very effectively a gospel Jsolo and. the
large chorus held the people 'for some
time after they were dismissed with
their popular gospel singing. : ,
'1 looked over this crowd," said Dr.
Brougher. "to see . which is the more
curious, .men or women. I think It Is
about even fop-there are fully as many
men here tonight as women. Evidently
they are just as curious as the women."
Passing Into the serious portion of
his discourse, he dwelt on - the-theme
that curiosity Is productive of good, as
well as evil.. Through curiosity one nut
be led Into evil but one may find the
good as welL. After satisfying all the
demands of curiosity through life, one
will not reap reward at the end if his
curiosity has not .led him to know the
Christ.
From l.uke lt:l 10, Dr. Broughr
read the Parable of Zaccheua. the pub
lican, whose curiosity led him to seek
Christ. Dr. Brougher pointed out that
this kind of curiosity is worthy of emu.
lation and at the same time warned
his audience against tha curiosity that
led Eve. to the tree of evil. .
"Tour associates may laugh and sneer
you into neii." asserted ur. Brougher,
'"but they cannot laugh r sneer 'you out
of it. Many men cannot stand by their
convictions because they haven't any."
Turning from curiosity leading to sin,
Dr, Brougher then showed that curi
osity would lead people - to ' become
Christians. He stated that he believed
In the use of curiosity for leading men
to Jesus Christ. .... . . v v
