will finish there tonight and shift back

ing timbers to be distributed through

PREPARING FOR CARGO.
Portholes Will Be Cut in Bows of
' . Bark Ancaios.
The work of cutting; portholes in the
bow of the British bark Ancaios will be
begun shortly and as soon as it has
been completed the vessel will shift to
one of the lumber mills to receive cargo.
The Oregon Pine Export . Lumber
company will dispatch the Ancaios with
a full cargo of Oregon fir for Europe,
and now that the board of trade of Eng
land has abolished the rule of limiting
lumber deckload to more than three
feet she will take all her capacity will
allow. Dosalbly about 2.000,000 feet
The Ancaioa has been in the harbor
several weeks, having; : arrived here
from Newcastle, Australia, with i
(arm. of coal for the O. R. A N. com
pany. She is at present lying idle at
the O. W. P. dock, where th British
ships Largiemore and Leyland Bros, are
also at rest both of them waiting for
anmeLhins' to turn UD. .
The Largiemore brought a cargo of
coal from Newcastle, dui in xeyiana
Bros, came In ballast from Valparaiso,
her owners expecting to get in on. the
old crop buslnesa Contrary winds de
layed her .and in the, meantime the
freight market tumbled so that when
she finally arrived exporters were pay
ing nowhere like the rate that looked so
inviting when the square-rigger struck

A report from Astoria this morning

the Columbia and one of a number of
iisn boats that had ventured out waa
capsized. The men were rescued, now
ever. The wire to the Cape Is down

A bell buoy will again be established
at the mouth of the Columbia river to
mark the south channel. - An experi
ment wa made some time ago, but it
was found -that the seas were too heavy
for the buoy and it was taken back. It
is believed, however, that by anchoring
the buoy about half a mile farther out
to sea it will be able to stand the
strain, the sea being calmer In deeper
water.
