Shelter Cove along the canrornia
' coast has been found accessible - for
smalljcoasters, but it, too, la said to be
. aangeroua because, or rocae, ana mas
tera will not take to it except under
, most extraordinary . conditions. A few
days ago a number ot lumber droghers
.bound north sought shelter there while
a terrific northwester howled along off
shore and piled up tremendous combers.
It is said in the lee of Cape Blanco
would be . found a suitable anchoring
. ground if a few rocks barring-the en
' trance were blasted away. Possibly the
Jovernment can be induoed to bave this
one and mariners have talked the mat
ter over until it Is probable that it will
be laid before the authorities in the near
future. :-
Cape Blanco is the most westerly
Hj point on the Oregon coast and is marked
-. by a large light. It Is said to be fairly
well sheltered both from the north and
south, the shore line forming a small
bight between Port Orford and Cape
Blanco lighthouse, near which Elk creek
empties into the sea. It is also said
that the depth there is sufficient to ac
commodate even large steamers of
deeper draft although they are not in
as much need of shelter ae the smaller
. steam schooners that come north in
ballast and carry grain or lumber for
return cargoes.

Attempt Will Be Made to Float Min
nie Kelton Today.
An attempt will be made thla morn
ing to float the waterlogged steam
chooner Minnie E. Kelton which has
lying in Youngs bar. near As-
tnce towed into port by the steam
schooner
torla
schooner Washington after having been
abandoned off i equina bay several
weeks ago.
The attempt will be made at high
tide and barges will be placed along
side upon which it Is Intended to rest
the craft while towing her up the river
to the drydock at St Johns where re
pairs will be made. Tha, hull is filled
with lumber and therefore exceptionally
heavy. . ...
Since towed in the wreck has steadily
settled and there la some question or
it being possible to float it. Several
attempts to pump out ths hold proved
failures. . .
The Kelton wss abandoned after the
deckload and house had been carried
away, in a storm In the vicinity of
the mouth of the Coldmbla river while
the vessel was bound from Oravs Har
bor to San Francisco. Eleven of the
crew were drowned.
Ivar Benneche, five years of age and
son of Captain and ' Mrs.' O. Benneche,
has perhaps sailed th seas more than
any other person of his age.- He has
crossed the Paclflo eight, times and it

Captain Benneche : Is master of ths
five-masted schooner H. K. Hall which
is now loading piling at tha mills of
the Inmen-Poulsen Lumber company,
and , be . went to sea shortly after bis
birth at San Francisco. , Since then he
has followed the life of a sailor without
having been inside a house excepting on
occasions when visiting friends with
his parents. He Is getting an early and
fine education, however, for Mrs. Benneche-
Is an -accomplished woman and
he never misses his daily leesons In
reading, Writing and arithmetic. Mrs.

Forefather Buried Coins That
Proved Disappointment.
From ths Japan Times.
A highly respected man of old family
had a "chamber of secrecy" ' in his
house which the sanitary authorities
one day Insisted on entering. Beneath
the floor the servants found a large
antiquated earthen-pot, which was at
once taken to ths master. Kltayama,
who opened It in expectation of rind
ing something, and true to his antici
pations the pot was fUled with ancient
gold coins.

forefathers, wss carefully deposited In
the family shrine, to which sake and
other offerings were made In profound
obeisance to the memory of the good an
cestors who left such a splendid gift
to posterity. A banquet was given on
the following evening in honor of the
auspicious event fo which several
friends and neighbors were Invited. '
Here a curio dealer proceeded to In

at once pronounced them 'all lead
