where her parents now reside, but she
studied and lived in Portland so long
that she Is usually regarded as a Port

San Francisco and then to New York,
studying with the best teachers In
those cities. Upon her return from the
east Miss Case divided her time be
tween Portland and . California. She
was one of the official soloists during
the Lewis and Clark fair and made a

Mai from Vancouver, B. C, says: Frei
Mullln, s fl-herman. Is dead and his
wife is dying as the result of a hcrrl
ble cutting affray In which an unknown
legro figured as principal.
The murder took place. It Is supposed,
about midnight last night, but the bod
ies of the dead man., and the dying
woman were not round until today.
Mullln owns a sloon which lies aneh
ored off the docks during the night
Last night passers-by heard him Quar
reling violently with ' the- negro, who
waa aboard the sUtop. Mrs. Mullin can-
ruot talk, so the particulars of ths trag-
eay cannct ue learnea.
Mullin was found this morning with
his throat cut from ear to ear, with
some sharp Instrument, probably a ra
sor. As there are no 4ther marks of
violence on the body It Is supposed
he was attacked unawares probably
while asleep.
Mrs. Mullln evidently put Up a hard
fight against the murderer. ' In addi
tion to s badly cut head, which will
cause her death, she Is cut about the
hands, showing - that she must have
grasped "the weapon before she was mor
tally wounded.
The police have been unable to obtain
a trace of the negro.

yesterday afternoon for the first time

the same evening, and left a very fa
vorable Impression among the cltisens
he met while here. He was stsed up
by Salem business men as a good mixer
and he will be given a hearty welcome
to his new post nere.
Rev. Mr. Holman will be tendered a
reception at the university Monday
morning.' He was not In th olty this
time long enough to meet all the in
structors or any of the students, as
they were just concluding tn semesters
examinations.
Next week will be commencement
week at the university, .during which

fore him here. It is realised that the
