"It will be Just 66 years ago October
16. since I first saw Portland... At that
time the city consisted of two or three
log cabins on Water street .Ox teams
were the streetcars then, and the street
were rude trails cut by the first comer
to the Columbia river.
: "We had a mighty hard fight to get
enough to eat that winter. Freight wa
packed to The Dalles on the prairie
schooner and pack train and shipped
down the river on flat boats, and these
boats were few and far between. There
wa" no flour-and potatoes -were 35 a
bushel. Bacon was almost out of reach,
and hay was 40 a ton. , - " i

'I saw on the street the wagon In
which Ezra Meeker say he crossed the
plains In- 1852. Its all a fake. We
didn't use that style of vehicle at all
In those days. The wagon we did use
was much the same as those in use
now. A square 20-lnch bed was covered
with a false bottom of boards and on
top of thi was carried the bedding.
'Between the two bottoms we stored
meat, flour, and other supplies and
when we wished to get at the store
w simply removed" a board and reached
for. what we wanted. When the sup-
i pile were exhausted we used the
(boards in making grave for the dead.

an easy trail . to follow, for it was
