The box sectlos at "Vesuvius was
crowded last night by officers of the
war fleet and friends, and about B.000
other friends filled the new grandstand
at Multnomah field In a manner most
gratifying to the enterprising: local 'man
agement, which went to enormous ex
pense to brlnsr the spectacle to Portland.
Appropriate fireworks were riven and
the vast audience ' was delighted with

ages of advertising were well Illustrated
at the automobile road race yesterday
at the cross country .track. ' The Illus
tration was In the form of a city boy
and a farmer youth, both of whom were
engaged tn the ham sandwich business.
The farmer boy was backward. He
wasn't there with the big spiel and he
walked quietly through tne great crowds
of people without -a word of advice as
to the greot benefits to be derived from
eating one of his sliced buna with a tis.

was artless enough to think of the Idea
of peddling ham sandwiches, but he

Whilst the farmer boy - went around
with a full basket the city boy did all
the business. And simply because he
advertised. The country, boy's sand
wiches were probably Just as good and
fresh as those of his opponent. But he
didn't advertise and at night took home
nearly ail the ham and buns that he
had expected to sell.

to be on the ground for the opening- of
the convention.

Asa B. Thomson of Echo, from the Sec
ond district; will leave for Chicago to
morrow. Dr. H. W. Cos, a delegate
from the Second district, leaves for
Chicago today. A. K. Gilbert of Balem,
a. delegate at large, will leave during
the first of next week, while Judge
George H. Williams will leave Thurs
day. Judge Williams may second the
nomination of William H. Taft for. the

the specially engaged actors, who as
sumes the dignified role of lord mayor
of Naples, appeared at times to have
stage- fright while again he showered
more attentions upon the Queen of
Italy than upon her royal consort
The climax came when he lighted a
stogie In the presence of the priests
and the cardinal besides. No one bat
Old Vesuvius" himself Is allowed to
moke within the fireworks enclosure,
and for any one, even the lord mayor, to
break this rule, quickly brought the at
tention of the ubiquitous stare director.
Dr. Bernard, who diagnosed his case as
