"By an errojr in an advertising article
written for' this paper and published
"yesterday It was.'stated that Richard C.
I (art, superintendent of the United
' States light-house service for this dis
trict holds the position- of vice president
of the Florence placer Mining company,
which, owns the rich placer grounds in
f the Florence district in" Idaho. Mr.
Hart Is the secretary and treasurer of
1 the company, and not its vie president,
Mr. George L. Pcaslee occupying: that
position and Hon, John B. Cleiana, one
of the circuit court Judges, its presl-

-nsa left aawson, xuaon xerniory, wiui
$1,760,000 on board for Canadian end
American points, and that 126,000,000
is the estimated product of Alaska Ter-
rltory placer mines 'for this season.
The comparatively small dltrict-rbout
two miles wide and 10 miles long in
which is located the mines of the local
, company, has produced 'more' than $100,
000. 000, and the 640 acres owned by our
home people covers the greatest gold do-
' posltory of the entire region, and no
part of It ever has been mined by any
' one for the reason that it could not
be without the hydraulic elevators, now
being Installed. The gulches leading
down to the meadows, or bottom lands,
could be worked, as they were, by the
. pans of the placer miners, but when
their base was reached the pan was use-
. less. For"1 centuries uoon centuries wa-
'ter from the mountains pouring down
Into the channels ot the creeks below
had been washing down the gold and
' depositing it -there, where it has re
mained until now. H. B. Perks, a min
ing engineer of almost international
reputation, last fall discovered that
these meadows, formed by the deposits
from the mountains, ' were owned , by
William Crandall, of ' OrangeviUe, as.
enfeebled man 63 years of age, and
could be bought. The deal was closed
before the - death of Mr. Crandall In
March, and machinery isx now being
taken In to work the ground. A small
sawmill was shipped to the mines
bv the Portland Machinery - company
of this city two weeks ago, which
will be used to cut ? lumber tor
the flumes, and the ploing and 'aux-
i lllaries are being carted in. As the
? round has been thoroughly sampled
here Is not the slightest doubt of its
' richness, and those persons who secured
- the company's stock at 35 cents per
share at this time may confidently count
on a !6-year Income of at least 200 per
cent per annum on their investment.
Upon request, by telephone or mall,
made to the company, t JO Commercial
Club building.. Fifth and Oak streets,
its complete prospectus wilt be mailed
to any address, It is worth reading.

CRUISER'S MEN AS

. The Jolly Cane Men of the Charleston

Portlanders. About 150, people were
gathered at the Armory for the dance
given by this organisation of sailors of
the flagship in harbor. The dance fol

led out the grand march. Several of
the Junior officers were present the ear

were a few prominent young women of
the younger set who made up- the ad

The band which Is part W the Jolly
