ROOSEVELT MY
SPEAK FOR TAFT
5 .
President Has Decided; to
Hare a Word or Two to
Say for Secretary. ; -
H.nrv K. LAmoie.
lal sUt.ment on the subject has bsen
out, the Information comw .u
trustworthy sources that President
Roosevelt baa decided to make two or
tt&df campaign speeches la the event
, th6ecretary ie nominated for presl-
1 dent by the convention at Chicago.
There has been no decision, of course,
.' a to the time and placet of these
epeechea, but It la understood to be the
preildent's desire that at least one of
them should be delivered In New yort
Would Speak la Hew York.
There le a two-fold reason why the
president would prefer to speak in New
York. One, ef course, la that it Is his
Mown state, and whlls It Is true New
York U the center of and Roosevelt
: sentiment, the president has a strong
following among the masses of Empire
state Republicans and has not tin any
serious measure lost his Influence with
them, The second Is that New York,
as always. Is a plvotol state. The Re
publican nominee might be elected with
out New York'e electoral vote, but It Is
essential to Democratic suooess, and the
president could render the Republican
nominee no greater service than by
helping to bold the .Empire state in
line. - .' ' i .
:; h May Be Criticised. .',.,'
v It goes without saying that the Pre
.., ident is going to be severely criticised
for 'making campaign speeches, but it
is fairly safe to assume that this pros-
fective criticism- doee not worry Mr.
toosevelt. ' He has no great veneration
1 for precedents which have back of them
nothing more substantial than hoary
ago. and if he thinks it light to lay
alde : the presidential dignity long
enough to speak for his friend no con
siderations 4 of adverse criticism are
going to stop him.-!
There ' is no warrant for assuming,
however, that the country will be vlo-
lently outraged in feeling if Mr. Roose
velt makes a campaign speech or two.
He hae done other, things no other
f 'resident would nave dared to do, and
nstood of rising in their wrath to de
stroy, the people have applauded.
There Is every prospect the coming
u-uiipHi-n win do one ox lunous oratory,
excelling possibly that of 18. Just
why this should be so Is not apparent,
but both parties ere making elaborate
plans for this feature of the campaign,
though plans in advance of the nom
inating conventions, of course, are mere-
onouia secretary Tan Be the noiu
. I nee of the Chicago convention he ex

accepted as a matter of course that if

.' " ioi i speecnes. it has

, candidate' for president went on the
stump, but Mr. Taft believes the peo-
fle will want to see and hear him and
e doesn't propose their shall be de.
... rrivea "c tne opportunity to do so.
When James O. Blaine was the can
didate in 1884 he took the atfimn. nH
t.iough he failed of election it was not
inn opinion at tne time that he lost
more than he gained by reason of his
peech-maklng. . Undoubtedly r Bryan

he otherwise would byJ reason-of the
great personal enthusiasm his speeches
- With the president of the United
States and both the leading candidates
.; for president making speeches, the peo
ple would fairly revel in oratory. Their
appearance on the stump would make
s make it difficult, f course, for orators
of lesser note to attract attention to
themselves, but that Is not a matter
over which the public at large need be
seriously concerned. . t ,,,, -... ., , ;

Denver, Colo., June J. Several prom
Inent Democrats who visited the eon
ventlon auditorium today In advance of
the convention to Inspect the monster
structure, entered a oomplalnt that no
provision nas Deen maae xor a oar in
the building. The nearest bar la about
a block away. The Denver city council
has decided not to grant any temporary
liquor franchises nearer to the conven
tion nan. -It
developed today that several hun
dred applications have been made to
the committee on arrangements for a
bar concession in the convention hall
and that large sums were offered for
the privilege, but that all offers have
been refused.
It is the Intention of the oommittee
not to secure any revenue from the au
ditorium while the convention is In
session. Space near the convention hall
for several blocks is being sold to re
freshment contractors, but ths best
that these men can sell Is lemonade.
