district and rescued two sailors of the
United States ship Louisiana, who had
fallen into the hands of the dantzena of
the tenderloin. '
When young Brans saw hie rsttow
allora In trouble ho wadad Into the
crowd using his fists vigorously and
wiien be was surrounded, drew a re
volver and told them that he would
shoot the first man that got in hl
way.
He made his way to the men he
wanted to protect and forced three
thugs to take their hands off them and
allow them to go with him. . t
The erowd was getting angry at the
Interference of the vouns lieutenant
and was preparing o rush him wben
uie ponce arrivoa on me scene.
Kvini wore civilian' clothes and wee
not recognised aa a sailor. The police
at once placed him under arrest on the
charge tf carrying a concealed weapon
and ordered him to go with them to
the oity prison.
Having seen that his friends were
safe, he readily surrendered and did
not tell who he was until he arrived
at the central station. There he
quickly established bis identity and
was. released on his own recognisance
to appear to answer . to the . charge of
carrying a revolver.
The sailors rescued by Evans were
William Edmundson and John Walllck.
The trouble started at the U. a
dance hall on ' Pacific street. Evans
had come ashore to see the sights and
was on the outskirts of the crowd
when lie observed that a woman wa
f olng through the pockets of one bf
he sailors.
He saw the woman take $20 'from
the sailor and the blue jacket at the
same, time realised that he was being
roooea ana graDDea tne woman, pusn-Ins-
her against the tabl, knocking It
over. This threw the dance hall into
wild disorder and - the hangers-on
would fiave given them rough treat
ment if Evans had not suddenly come
plunging through the crowd knocking
men ngnt ana lert ana Dranaisnmg a
ble- revolver, which he said he would
use, and he looked like he meant Just
wnat ne saia.
Those who Were present said that
Lieutenant Evans used some language
nerer Deiore near a on uarDery coast
and it is suggested that he probably
learned It from his father.
Lien tenant Evans recently went east
with his father, returning last Sundays
to auiy upon tne Louisiana, it- is not
expected that the charge of. carrying a
concealed weaDon will ' be creased
against the lieutenant.
