warehouses at the present hour It Is
Impossible to estlmat what proportion
will likely change hands before evening.
Among the larger clips to be offered

rumor gained circulation to the effect
that responsibility for the dlsappear-

that radical changes in the treasurer's

, Denies All Intention of
Committing Fraud.

Washington, Jun 2. John A. Benson,
on of th defendants In tha Hyde-Benson
land fraud case that has been on
trial her for several weeks, today took
the atand In his own behalf and gave
Interesting testimony concerning the
circumstances that led to th dissolu
tion of the partnership between him and
Frederick Hyde.
Benson first declared that he had been
engaged in th real estate business in
San Francisco for 86 years and that
during that period he signed a contract
with Hyde to sell property located ..in
Oregon. He said hs got the first, in
timation that the titles to the property
wer faulty In November. 1802, when he
sent his lawyers to Hyde to question
him on this point. Hyde Insisted that
th title were good, Benson continued,
but In spite of this the lawyera re
ported them to be faulty.
Hyde then suggested that Benaon
send his chief clerk to Oregon to con
duct a personal Investigation. This

that the titles were good, said Ben
son. The witness declared that he then
notified his clients of this state of af
faire and later rescinded his contract
with Hyde. ,
