light and the night was ery dark. -Occasionally

'of the Btskiyous, at 1:11 a. m. and at

"The worst stretch, of road we encoun-
tered was a toll road, two miles In
length, on the Oregon side of the Biskl
vmi summit. Next to this the , worst
road traveled was In the Pitt river coun
try, wher a stretch of about 40 miles
of bare rock wore the tires down and
was very rough oh-the auto. At Sis-
son we rot lost on a iuiu oer roaa lu
wandered 60 miles out of the direct
road. There were many crossroads and
we could not tell which -was the tight
one In the dark. Another thing that de
layed us was a strong neaa wind en-
countered the. entire length of the Sac
ramento valley, -wa tnen wastea quite
a while In each town waking people up
so as to secure directions. We reached
Hornbrook at I o'clock and were there
half an hour before we succeeded In
waking the station agent Many roads
wera deep with mud and none were In
rery good shape. I am satisfied we
could make the trip a second time with
in the original schedule. The odometer
records 490 miles, showing that in ex
cess of (0 miles was lost over wrong

from Missouri In 1847. and continued

The battleship will proceed to the
quay wall, where , preparations have
been made for her. On account of the
number of auxiliaries there . now the
space Is at a premium but by, .shift
ing several vessels it has ' been ar
ranged to give the battleship a promi
nent place. She will remain In the
drydock several weeks while a new
high pressure cylinder is installed In
the place of the one broken on the
voyage up the coast. The cylinder Is
being completed rapidly by day and
night shifts of workmen.

been submitted to the Warrenton board
of trade showing: the assessed valuation
of property in the town will be about
three times last year's assessment This
will permit the raisins; of sufficient
funds to pay the indebtedness and for
the purchase of a fire engine and other
needed improvements.
