.San Francisco Liners Arrive . After
Thrilling Experiences.
The steamers State of California and
George W. Elder encountered some very
severe weather coming here from. San
Francisco this 'trip. Their decks Vers
under water half the time and most of
the passengers remained in shelter dur
ing the entire voyage. - "
It is seldom that officers Of the regu
lar liners running out of here - admit
having bucked rough weather because
they are used to heavy swells and
strong winds, but this trip they made
no attempt at saying that the weather
was good. They admit it wss about-aa
rough as can well be expected.
v The steamers reached their respective
docks late last night, both bringing good
Srissenger lists snd full cargoes, but a
ay late. This was due to the terrific
headwinds and tremendous seas into
which they" had to plunge.
The steamers pitched so that it was
almost Impossible' to keep one's feet,
and to keen the. deck from being turned
into a seething mass of foam the en
gines bad to be slowed down to half
speed. . V . c -
The State of California came north
In command of Captan Nopander, for
merly of the. Senator, and with Chief
Engineer Reld in charge of the engine
room. Captain Hall and his officers
and crew who brought the liner here
last trip are in quarantine at San Fran
cisco, a case of smallpox having de
veloped on board on the voyage south,
ALONG THE WATERFRONT.

what is believed to be a. reliable source
the report comes that the eawmlli of
the Plttock A Leadbetter Lumber com
pany" here will soon be dismantled and
the' machinery removed to a elte at or
near WasuougaX, 18 miles up the river.
The . present Ite of ., the company's

trolled by the Kill railway Interests and
would he a very valuable addition to the
water, front now belonging, to the Hill
iwinla. Although O. L. Cummlnaa.
oianager of the mill company, positive
ly denied that his company had sold
the plant to the raUway interests, he
said nothing as regards the ground on
which the mill stands. The Impression
was given out, however, that no deal
whatever had been closed with the
Hill company.
There are several circumstances
which tend to support the belief that
the mill plant has been sold, chief
among;" them being that the mill com
pany has acquired a suitable site near
WashougaX
On the other hand It la known that
ever since the construction of the

have been made to set control of the
