(Hunt Km by longest Leased Win.)
: London. Jiajr JS. Alfred a. Vander
bilt, whom the English press delight In
calling "the richest young man In the
world. baa taken one of the moat
'swagger" flat In London; For tha
privilege of living on the sixth floor
overlooking Piccadilly, the famous Lon
don thoroughfare, the American million
aire Is paying $10,000 a year. As the
t ent does not Include- rates and taxes,
there u an extra Item of expense of
about JS.000 per annum. To the British
public (260 a week looks like a tall price
to pay Just to keep a flat roof over
. tners head, tut to the scion oT the
Vanderbllts, with his experience of 26.-(-00
suites at the Astoria and one of
150,000 at the New Plata, It is a mere,
bagatelle. ....-":. -
So far "as" London Is concerned, tha
flats in which young Vanderbilt is now
settled. are the last word in their Una.
Nothing like them has ever been at
tempted In this part of the world, and
the American, with his Transatlantic
Ideas of unlimited expenditure,, is the
Only person who has as yet had the
nerve to rent One. They are built on the
site of the mansion of the late Duke of
Cambridge, and stand midway between
the high class club district and May
fair, thi home of England's 'Tour Hun
dred." Next to them, and stretching up
Piccadilly to Apsley house, the town
residence of the Duke of Wellington,
which shuts Hvde oark. are the several
residences - occupied- by-, tb famous
Itothschild family, the kinge or inane.
' J Oft Parjt-Jfcaas.- - ---' :
The building in which Vanderbilt haa
. taken up his quarters, has a frontage
on Ficcamliy or almost 10 reel ana on
Park Lane of about S00 feet It Is of
gray granite, rather fantastically and
ostentatiously ornamented with- glased
green brick.' Thera are six flats (over
fiere they have not yet learned the nice
distinction between flat and apartment),
each one of which contains 10 large bed
rooms, three bathrooms, a number of
smoking, billiard- and drawing rooms,
cloakrooms, kitchen, halls, boudoirs and
a great big ballroom. A man without
any family with him. ought to worry
&lon r on that. -
i Mr. Vandervilt has denied that there
Is any serious trouble between him and
lila wife, and some time aeo there was
a- rumor that., with his better half at
'the head of his establishment, he In
tended doing quite a little entertaining

It Is now thought" that If ha does
anything in the way of entertaining It
"will take the form of smart ''stags" for
those associated with him at Olympla.
Of course, should he wish to give a co
tillon or two to -Include the fair sex.
"Keggie" Vanderbilt and his wife will
1 be in town, and his sister-in-law would
always be available an nostess,
Almost any degree of entertaining In
a flat would be a novelty for English
society.-- wnen a smart lonaon matron
who lives in a flat wishes to play the
fart of hostess, she generally takes her
friends to the Kits or to Claxldge'a. For
in the usual run or juonaon iiats tners
Is not enough room to do anything much
except sleep, (some or tnem are so
