Mayor Lane vetoed two ordinances
today which will be sustained by the
council next week. One is a measure
i appropriating $600 for east side deco
rations durlna- the Rose Festival and
the other regulates junk dealers and

vetoed because it provides for an ex
penditure unauthorised by the charter.
The - second veto will be sustained be
cause of certain provisions which the
councilman will remedy in a new ordi
nance regulating pawnbrokers and junk
dealers.
I. B. Smith, L. W. Humphreys and
Frank PetersT members of the debating
team of the law department of the Uni
versity of Oregon, left last night for
Seattle, where tonight they will en
gage a trio of champions from the law
department of the University of Wash
ington in forensic contest. The ques
tion for debate is, "Resolved, that the
initiative and referendum should be
adopted In the state of Washington."
The, Oregon debater chose the negative
side' of the question.
The Multnomah Improvement club
has passed' resolutions censuring the
city council for accepting a remon
strance filed against the Improvement
of Kerby street when .there were not
enough signatures on the remonstrance
to make it legally efectlve. The club
will ask the water board to replace
the four-Inch main on Maryland avenue
between Fremont ana enaver mreei.
The club has also adopted resolutions
calling upon the stores of the city to
close at 8 o'clock Saturday afternoons.
James H. Cochrane. 64TH First street,
Is now being bunted by the police de
partment. Cochrane baa a bad case of
diphtheria and was under quarantine
at the St. Vincent's sanitarium yester
day but last night he managed to make
his escape ana is now running ai targe.

apprehension Is felt by the authorities

the disease.
A parlor and observation car will be
put on the Pendleton local for the pur

Catholic Club Street Fair
Well Patronized by
Friends.
The biggest crowd that has yet at
tended the street fair and carnival
now going on at the Catholic Young
Men's club on Morris street went out
last night to see the show. The weath
er was for the first time half way fa
vorable, and the booths and concessions
were packed to overflowing. The re
ceipts ecHpsed all other nights since
the fair opened, amounting to something
more than $1,000.
Nearly every Knight of Columbus in
the city was present, and this added
greatly to the success of the evening.
The knights are all jolly fellows, and
they seemed to infuse the spirit of
fiesta into the visitors.
The Tyrolean singers did not get out
from the Onks until a late hour, but
nearly everybody waited for them, and
nobody was disappointed. The concert
rendered by this organisation la worth
going a long way to near. Fourteen vo
calists compose the personnel of the
Tyroleans, and every one is a finished
artist. .
The promise of fine weather this
evening Is expected to bring out anothrr
record. The Society of Saint Joseph
will have charge of this evening's en
tertainment. The special feature which the man
agement has secured for tonight, le a
fancy drill by 30 members of the fine
drill team of the Webfoot camp No. 65
of the Woodmen of the World.
Special attention is drawn by the
management to the fact that there will
be a free matinee for the children to
morrow afternoon.
The club will give another dance to
morrow evening. These dances are
proving to be one of the most pleasant
attractions of the carnival.
The Democratic county central com
mittee has accepted the Invitation of
the club to meet Republican speakers
In debate some evening next week, and
the Democrats say they will have a
coterie of speakers that will show up
some of the fallacies of the Ck O. P.
There will be no show Sunday, as the
boy who have been working hard every
evening of the fair are in need of rest
The country band has some new corn

Monday evening.

ton Instead of II per ton. The company
was forced to pay 1766.4 in freight
when at the rate It claims to have
shipped under the total la only 21.
No extra damages are asked for In this
B. E. Meredith shipped 64 tons of
wheat and. was charged $-607.86 more
than he wanted to- pay. He asks for this
amount back from the steamship own
