land and through Pinnanoe's generosity

and as Cooney ran to cover the bag" Van
Haltren hit through the opening. Helt-
riuller, Eagan and Hogan singled and
hree runs were over with no one out.
Haley could not -reach -the wide throw
which Plnnanee sent to him as he and
Eagan were trying to work the squeeze
play and -Madden tagged him a mile
Off the base. Cook and Haley struck

Portland tried hard to get one over In
her half of the sixth but after Baseey
had cracked out a two bagger to right
field both Johnson and Cooney sent up

May 22. Archie Hahn. famous Michigan
sprinter and winner of " the 100-meter
dash at Athena in .1908, is to be re
tained by Pad no to coaoh her athletic
teams the coming year. This action was
taken at a meeting of the athletic com
mittee' last week, when a contract was
drawn up and signed. Mr. Hahn is very
popular with the students; and the ath
letes of the school are joyous over the
fact that he is to come back next year.
"Archie" came to Pacific last spring
and took up the task of developing ji
track team out of entirely new material,
He brought out several good men and
the team passed through a very success
ful season. As a result he was en
gaged to have charge of all the ath
letics the current year, coaching foot
ball,' basketball and track teams, and
under his enthuslastlo leadership Pacific

deaf and dumb scrapper. In Marshfield
the other day in 10 rounds, and after
a few fighta with the best men in the
state will probably go south and meet
some of the top notchers In California.
June ( Strangler Smith will meet Bill
Scholtes. The Dalles whirlwind, at Hood
River, in a bout, best two out of three
falls. On the previous meeting of the
two men. Smith secured three out of the
five falls, but It was only after a hard
struggle. After the Scholtes match
Smith will proceed eastward, taking on
all the local champions In The Dalles,
Heppner, Pendleton, La Grande and
Baker City.

Burns, the American heavyweight
champion, sends word over from Lon
don, that he will never fight Jack John
son, the colored whirlwind, unless he is
guaranteed 330,000, win, lose or draw.
Billy Neail, the American's manager,
who IS now visiting at his home in
Oakland, received the letter containing
the terms under which his man will
meet Johnson. Burns also announced
that he had been a-uaranteed 130.000 bv
Jaok Curley, the Chicago fight pro
moter, to fight Johnson at Goldflcld, but
It Is not thought In sporting circles that
much will come from the offer.
At any rate. Burns Instructed -Neail
to send the forfeit money to Otto Floto
of Denver to bind the match in case
Curley Is In dead earnest. Burns wrltea
that he will leave for America at once
if the match is made.

son evidently is in no hurry to get back
to San Francisco and go into training
for his 45 round battle with Joe Gans
on July 4. According to advices from
the north today he is cruising around
Puget sound. Last night he was at
Port Townsend, and is expected to put
back to Seattle today, leaving for the
south Saturday night or Sunday.
The forfeits have been deposited by
the fighters and Promoter Coffroth, and
Gans has already made his plans for
the training spell. Gans will rough it
for a oouDle of weeks at Harbin Sorlnas.
and then return to Shannon's villa in
Marin county, where he will finish
training.
Nelson may spend a week or 10 days
tramping over the hills In Mendocino
