" necessary steps to have ail the old sol-
lilers from this city and vicinity, who
care to go, to become Its guests In a
visit to Taooma on May 20, in order
that they may not only celebrate Decor
ation day, but may also view the fleet
of battleships. All expenses are to be
trorne by the club. The invitation is ex
tended equally to those who wore the

During April.?
Portland again took the lead as a
wheat shipping port in tha United
States during the month of April, New I
York being second in point of promt-1
nence, according to statistics compiled
by the Department of Commerce and
Labor.
All told $,505,501 bushels wheat were!
exported during April, and of that
quantity. 1,108,214 bushels were shipped
from Portland, this meaning that about
one-third of tba entire quantity ex
ported from the states was sent out

sound porta exported 654,864 bushels or I

In point of prominence as an individ
ual port in regard to wheat shipments I

609,245 bushels, while the combined
shipments of 'the Puget sound ports
were 13,707,893 bushels. Galveston ex

states exported during those 10 months

LUMBER CHAFT DEPART.
Tiverton, Shoshone and F. N. Loop
Off for California Ports.
Several lumber-carrying steam schoon
ers struck out for San Francisco yes
terday. The Tiverton left here yester
day afternoon from the mills of the
North Pacific Lumber company and tho
Shoshone started down from one of the
lower river mills.
The steam schooner F. N. Loop
crossed out yesterday afternoon from
Astoria, lumber laden, for Ban Fran
cisco, and at Rainier the Olson ft Ma
honey is loading for the Bay City. Tho
Melville Dollar Is loading at Prescott.
The steamer Homer arrived in the
harbor this morning with general cargo
from San Francisco and under engage
ment to carry wheat and lumber south.

Captain Mitchell of the Irene Says
Leviathans Are Increasing.
Coming up from San Francisco the
schooner Irene ran Into a large school
of whales and Captain Mitchell suc
ceeded In securing several good snap
shot photographs of the leviathans.
Captain Mitchell says he never saw so
many whales off the coast before.
The Irene is loading lumber at Knapp
ton for San Diego, having secured an
other charter, although it was supposed

her arrival this trip. Captain Mitchell
was In the city yesterday and left for
Knappton last night in the steamer T.
J. rotter.

Voting at Catholic Club Fair
Continues Amid Much
Rivalry.
The management of the Catholic
Young Men's club is highly pleased
with the success of the club carnival
on Morris street. The carnival has
drawn large crowds every evening thus
far in spite of the bad weather which
has prevailed since the opening Mont
day night With each succeeding eve
ning the receipts of the fair are grow
ing larger.
This Is the first time a venture of
fhls kind has been tried on the east
side, and the officers or the club were
a little doubtful of the outcome at
first, but the liberal patronage thus far
given by the people in spite of adverse
weamer. naa convinced tn carnival
management that an annual street fair
can be made prontable. A lew sunny
days will swell the receipts so there
will be no doubt that the debt on the
new club building will be entirely liqui
dated when the carnival ends, .

Marius Directing Operations
of Revolutionists From
Refuge at Kingston.

Port Au Prince. HayU. May 21. In
cited to insurrection by Septimus Mari
us, the rebel leader, from his refuge at
Kingston, Jamaica, a serious anti-government
outbreak has taken place in
the southern part of the island. Strong
forces have been sent to the scene to
suppress the uprising, but fears are en
tertained that before the troops arrive
the Insurrectionists will have seised a
number of cities, following tne seisure
with massacres in revenge for th sum
mary execution of a number of prom
inent anti-government sympathisers in
this city last March. - . '
The situation is, deemed critical in
the extreme and every measure is being
taken by the government to meet and
promptly put down th uprising. Pres
ident Nord Alexis' advisers are warn
ing the foreign legations to harbor no
more rebels under the direct penalties.
Marius is seeking aid to organise, an
expedition to assist the rebels. ,
Tree Planting Along County Roads.

The Stockton Arbor club has com
menced an active campaign to raise
funds for th purpose of saving the 14
miles of trees planted alosg four roads
leading out of Stockton.
Th scarcity of moisture this season
makes, it necessary that the trees be wa
tered several times, and additional
funds are necessary to carry the many
fins trees that have Keen growing
through th coming summer.
It is also the intention of the Arbor
club to later extend the tree planting
on th four roads already lined with
