ment the cargo consisted of a couple
of carloads of mlllwook, general pro
duce and 20 tons of hides. ? She brought
68 passengers. Captain Olson reports

with a full cargo of wheat and lum

The St. Helens discharged her gen
eral freight at Couch street dock last
night and then shifted across the river
to Montgomery dock No. 2 to take
wheat in the hold. She, will finish
with lumber , at Rainier. "
Upon discharging the cargo at San
Francisco the St Helens. Instead of
returning to this lort, will leave for
Seattle to -tow a dredaer to Nome,
Alaska, where It is to be used to dig
gold bearing sand irom tne river oeus.
To make her better adapted for towing
and at the same time to increase the
earnings the vessel will also carry a
run general cargo ana poesioty a num
ber of passengers as she is well
equipped therefor.
The gasoline schooner Condor came
up from Waldport tetth a cargo of lum
ber and to return with general mer
chandise. This is ner second visit
within a few weeks. Coming into the
river vesterdav mornlnsr the vessel ran
afoul of a salmon seine and got it en
tangled in her propeller, xne net naa
to be jeut-loose after three hours f
valuable time had been lost In an effort
to release it without damage. . The
Greek fisherman threatened to eat
Captain Tyler alive for getting caught
In his trap, but the incident passed
over without bloodshed,
The Condor brought 60.000 feet of
rough, lumber from the mills of lie
Waldport Lumber company. Captain
Tyler reports that Newport's new news
paper which Is to be started today will
be known as the Newport Mall. John

son for hire unless, permit to do so has
been granted by the inspectors or their
deputies.
The inspectors will also place a check
On the number of passengers that boats
leaving Astoria for the open sea to meet
the entire neet on its way nortn mignt
carry. It la understood that every avail
able tug in Astoria will be sent out
over the bar trial aay ana many wouia
probably a-o out loaded beyond the dan
ger line unless strict precaution Is taken
by the inspectors.

Tomorrow morning the hearing of
the Alliance-Tatoosh case will come
before local Inspectors Edwards and
Fuller. The matter was postponed to
the 16th a few days aao as It was Im
possible to get some of the witnesses

passengers by calling out from this boat
