Ws tide of the story. : Perrine entered
the express car shortly before I o'clock
this morning to sort h la valuable pac
aces for the run to Vancouver, Brltlah
Columbia. As the expreaa messenger
waa working, a tall man in an over
coat with, braai button quietly entered
me car. rerrine luruvu w atv "
and the tail man said! "Throw up your
. handa" . ;
Perrine laughed at th robber, who
. approached Perrine and grabbed him by
the vest. Just at that moment the train
crave a lurch aa it started for the south
end of the tunnel which runs under
the city. Realising that the man meant
business, Perrlne started to fight, but
before be could strike a. blow he was
knocked down by a blow from behind.
Until he waa discovered by feilow .train
men half a mile north of Ballard, Per-
rlnef remembers nothing more of the Af
j jjajr - .. - .,... ... .
It Is evident that th robbers looted
the strongbox of $8,000 while the train
; was running through the tunnel and
that they left the car near the north
end of the tunnel, as all trains elowi
down when emerging at the north end.
That the robbers ar in Seattle Is the
opinion of the police, and that they will
lie low until the matter, becomes o.ult.
Freight Agent Thomas B. Deguan of
the Great Korthern stated this after
noon that It la his opinion that the rob
bers were well Informed about train ,
movements. He says It is A rule Of the I
Great Northern that all express cars
shall remain locked from the time the
.,' messengers enter them. Although Per-i
rine has not said so, it Is probable that
he had not yet locked the door, as he
never dreamed of a holdup while his.
car waa still within the shadow of the
union depot, a The police . believe that
the two men are the same that robbed
nd killed two express messengers at
penver a week -ago. -Perrlne Is at the
hospital in a critical condition and bis
- life is hanging la the balance.' .
The police have reported to headquar
ters that 16,600 in currency and 1200 in
nickels had been found at the foot of
the stairway leading to Kinnear park,
near-the north end of the tunnel. This
confirms the suspicions that the ban
dits left the train at this point and are

Dr. B. A. .Robinson, who waa accused
by the late George T. Myers of having
undue Influence over bis wife- and
daughter and with having caused the
death of, Mrs. Myers in 1908. through
his incompetence as a physician, .; ap

county court this morning to defend his
name and to ten his story oi uie iaiai
illness of Mrs. Myera i
The accusations of Myera against
Robinson snd the bitterness shown by
the former toward the ohyslclan and
his daughter, Mrs. Oeorgia Frances
Stevens, after the death of Mrs. Myers,
are the basis, for the contest begun by
Mrs. Stevens to overturn the will of her
rather, under which she was cut oil
with $20,000. while practically all the
remainder of the $30000 estate went
to her brother, George T. Myers jr, in.
atallmenta of the evidence in the con
test have been riven before Judge Web
ster several times in the last few
months, and the climax of Interest came
this morning when Dr. Robinson waa
called to the etana.
Just From Sick Bed.
It develops that- Or.- Roblneon - has
been in Portland since March 11, com
ing from his home in Virginia. He re
mained for soma time In hiding at the
home of Mrs. Stevens, it being thought
wise to keep his whereabouts a secret
Dr. Robinson this morning aald that he
suffered a sever illness soon before
he came to Portland, and he rose from
a sick bed to board the train. His phy
sician feared he would not reach . the
coast alive, he said..-
I told them that I tiust come," said
Dr. Robinson. "After I read the tes
timony that waa brought' out-err on
the other side, there was nothing else
for me to do, for I will not rest without
refuting It and defending my name. I
felt that there was no better way to die
than in the cause of truth, and I de
termined to coma."
Dr. Robinson was only fairly started
on his story when the noon adjourn
ment waa called. But in the snort time
he was on the stand he gava several
interesting; fragments of testimony rela
tive to himself and hla early acouaint-
anc with the Myers family. One of th
interesting- things he told waa a chap
ter of-political history, in which Tie ao-
counted for unfriendly remarks said to
have been made regarding aim by to
late Mark Hanna.
. Dr. Ko bin non said he waa wen- ac
quainted with Hanna, and spent much
time himself propagating the doctrines
of "sound money. He organised A
Sound Money league In Ohio and learned
now Hanna naa teen grooming wcB.ur

connected
th the committee on financial legis
lation of th New Tork chamber of
commerce, and urged th chamber to
support McKlnley. From conversation
with Hanna he knew that Hanna had
put a big sum Into th campaign, and
lis advised the chamber to get back of
McKlnley, because Hanna was in deep
and had the reputation . of getting his
money out of every investment he mad.

'"After that, said th witness, be de
voted almost two years to a fight
against th Ship subsidy bill fathered
by -Hanna. He said that if Hanna ever
told Senator Mitchell that the witness
was unreliable and could not be de
pended on, as a letter written by Mitcn
ell and sdmltted in evidence declares,
Hanna's words wer influenced by th
tact that Robinson couia noi oe ap
pended on to support ny Republican
measure regardless of Its character.'
Hanna would have made a great deal of
money by the passage or uie snip
sidy bill, th witness explained,
Tnkinar un . the bealnnlna 'Of 1

it started In l0i when the congres

Jetty near Astoria. Th Myers fam

said that th - eldsr Myers was tinder

of champagne... On th return trip, in
alighting from th train, Mrs., Myers
had a sever fall, her husband falling
to assist her. - That , waa the beginning
of her long illness.
