Rer." Benjamin Young. D. D., pastor of

Not only In ths biological realm do ws
meet with these forms but also in the
moral domain. Different oharacterlctles
attach to different men and make possl

' race comes under many kinds of types,
j To appreciate this It is but necessary to
.- compare the orient with the Occident or
pagan with Christian civilization.
Progress comes through the destruc.
; tion and evolution of type. In certain
parts, of the west are great fossil beds
from which scientists bavs dug many
strange petrified forms of pre-historic
f life. These huge bones and uncouth
skeletons which have been uncovered
"speak volumes as to life and environ
ment in by-gone ages. In strength and
bulk there-la an apparent superiority
over the forms of later ages, yet In
reality they represent Inferior types.
The mere ponderosity shows the lack of
brain power and delicate mechanism, the
; concomitants of high intelligence. The
' past is strewn with dead and useless
types. That there was purpose in their
existence cannot be doubted; nelthercan
ws question the evidence of plan re-

Bible and science unite In the affirma
tion that it costs something to make a
man. Man represents something more
' than a mere waste of mud. Tennyson
says, 'Men may rise on ths stepping
stones of their dead selves to higher
things.' Nature has risen on stepping
stones of her dead typ to higher
things. There la such a thing as the
ascent of man.' -
Moral Types Improve.
"If you- will notice the history of
Israel you will see how truly this has
been the order of development. Some
things were permitted in the infancy of
Israel which could not be tolerated in

cause of the hardness of their hearts
did God allow certain things in the past
Moral types continually improve and
become mora rigid. Jesus Christ is the
supreme man type, however.

One' of the most Interesting sermons
delivered yesterday In " the Portland
churches was that of Rev.. J. Whltcomb
Brougher at " the White Temple. -.His
theme was "The Golderl Rule Applied."
upon which Dr., Brougher dwelt to the
effect that much of the strife between
labor and capital is due to a misunder
standing of tha motives and miscon
struction of the actions and words of
each other.--. Dr. Brougher favors clos
ing stores at noon Saturdays ana eariyi

-Most or me anncuuies xoaay- Be
tween labor and capital, employer ana
employe come through misjudging one
another, simply because motives ' are
misunderstood and words and actions
are misconstrued. I heard a young
workman say the other oay; 'At one
time I thought mv employer a fiend In
carnate, but when I became thoroughly
acquainted ,wltn 1119 man ana under

lead to a higher appreciation of man

especially true as respects employer and
employe. rune-wouia. respect 'no man

looks upon ths laborer as a machine.
and not as a man. It consider him a

Let the golden - rule be pra:tleed and
character would be placed above ash.
The laboring man of . character would
he given the recognition that character
demands.'-. He would be the equal in
manhood tof the capitalist of eharacter.
He would be the superior of a capitalist
who lacked the equalities f a manly
character. The laborer is a man, and
labor .la . something more than-a com
modity. .. There must be a mutual rec
ognition on the part of labor and capi
tal of the true value of character. Many
a manufacturer gives greater care to
his machinery than he does to hie men.
If you break machinery you will have
to pay for repairs, but If you break the

He referred to the heresies advocated
by present day members of the Apos

"I take my ttwrne tonight f rosa a
small but vlgoroua sect called the "Tan-
