schooner Shoshone Is due. to arrive in
the river this afternoon to load lumber.

The river steamers Charles R, Spencer
an Bailey Gatsert are racing to Tne
; Dalles today and the' outcome Is being
watched with great interest, especially
among the waterfront fraternity. The
steamers are makingtheir first dally
round trip for tha season and today is
'the opportunity to capture the broom
for the season.
The Spencer beat the Gataert to Van
couver by ' a length after tone of the
most sensational tests of speed aver
pulled off in these water. Opposite
Linn ton the two . boats were abreast,
but in making tha turn at tht conflu
ence of tha Wiyamette . and Columbia
the Spencer gained the lead and man
aged to- hold It against the strong
current. The actual running; time from
' the steel bridge to the Vancouver wharf
was 66 minutes, which means. a apeeed,
Of 1 miles an hour. ,
' Both craft are flying light, neither
having picked up .enough freight , to
nil a truck, and their performance to
day will . therefore likely stand for the
season. - Captain E. V. Spencer went
as far as Vancouver n . his steamer
and took the electric car back to Port
land. He declares he was enjoying a

Frances Stanley, daughter of Principal
J: H. Stanley of the Highland school,
Portland, dislocated . her left wrist
while trying to mount a horse at the
Price livery barn yesterday morning.
Miss Stanley's foot slipped from th
stirrup, throwing her to the ground, but
the dislocated wrist waa the only in
jury sustained. She was taken to Mr.
Price's' residence nearbv. and Dr. T. C.
Campbell was summoned. Miss Stanley,
who is bookkeeper In the office of J. A.
wyeriy or mis piace, ana ner sister, Miss
Edna, who is visiting her from Port
land, had started to Stiver Lake, about
seven miles from here, for a day's out
ing, when -the accident occurred. sThe
patient Is doing- nicely at present, and
expects to be at work, again in a few
