GREAT CHRISTIAN DAY
Strange Customs, Softened by Time; Have Ckmo Down
. From the Time of Saxons Who Worshipped
the Teutonic Goddess Ostera:. li "
. Tomorrow will ha. ths greatest Sun
day of tha year, marked at In with
one nnd rejoicing, celebrating tha res
urrection of tha Lord. Throughout the
cltlts tba churches ara preparing for
paclal ' services and . tha cbolra bava
worked up ftpeolol programa of Eaatar
Easter Sunday Is universally recog
nlaed aa a day of rejoicing. A la tha
oaaa with moat of tha Christian rest!
vaJa It waa adapted from tba heathen
rltea. Formerly Ostera, the Teutonic
', goddeea who waa tba personification of
f the east, of the morning and the spring
. waa wonhlped In the month of April
Just aa the earth waa canting off the
apell of winter. The worship or ua-
. tera waa deeply rooted In northern upr
. many and waa brouaht Into Engltnd
by the Saxons. The early missionaries,
finding It impossible to aooilan it,
changed It to a Cbrlatlan festival. Thla
was easily done,, for the awakening
earth corresponded with tha thought of
, the resurrection of tba Iord and hi
power over death.
For a long time there waa discussion
concerning the late of Easter celebra
,tlon. The early Christiana observed the
name day aa the Jews In tha Feast of
the Passover, hut others observed Sun
day oeoause me resurrection was on
the Sabbath, Constantino finally de
cided the matter by decreeing that all
should observe the same day, tha first
Sunday after the full moon on or after
March 21.
Strange 1! aster Customs. '
At first tha ceremonies attending
Kaster were simple, but Constantino,
who loved pomp fend display, made it
more elaborate year after year. Night
watohea were instituted In the churches,
bugh wax candles took the place of
tapers. One popular belief that grew
up later, waa that one must wear a
new article of drees on Eaater Sunday
to Insure good fortune In love affaire
during the year. The euatom baa not
died out yel It waa believed that If
the fires were all put out Saturday
night and starred anew with flint and
steel -. Easter morning It would be a
Protection against lire The popular
ellef that the weather on .Faster will
decide the weather till- Whitsunday
still clings to many. - - ,
Eggs and rabbits have always been
associated with Kaater. In olden times
colored eggs with sentimental mottos
were exchanged as regularly as valen
tines. The egg eustom seems to have
Its souroe from both Christian and Pa
gan legend. With the early christians
the egg .symbolised the resurrection;
with the Romans it was used in holiday
gamea. Some think ' tha custom cam
from the Jews who had a hard .bollod
egg representing a fabulous bird, fit
one "of their f easts. In Persia people
exchange colored eggs In March In
memory of two mythical brothers who
mixed good and evil In the. world by
breaking together an egg of good spir
its and one of evil demons. .
There are many legends connecting
tha hare with the new moon, but In
all of them tha hare waa transported to
the moon in reward for aomav good
deed. , ; . 1 ,
v Ken's mrnegea nay.
Tn' some of tha peasant neighborhoods
of Europe Easter Monday and Easter
Tuesday are observed with varloua old
customs. Monday Is the men's day,
when they may bsat tneir wives or
ma v tamu the women tney meet ana
demand kisses from them, Tuesday the
women return xavors. . s
. Jovous mualo Is one of the firmest
associations with Easter. Soma of the
moat Inspiring ana Deautirui music in
the world haa been written for Easter
and on Easter subjects. The old monks,
shut off from the Joys of the world,
seemed to pour out their souls at this
one- time In joy and many Deautirui
hymns have . come down from them,
rlnwun and sunshine are inseparably
connected -with Eaater. Should it .rain
mrr Easter in a child's life but one.
that one would stamp tha rest Lilies
n AaMclallv associated with tha day.
It seems more thoroughly a season of
Christian rejoicing even tnan cnnsi
ml for there Is lass thought of self
In the Easter day.
