GOOD FRIDAY ALMOST END
OF THE SOMBER LENTEN DAYS
mA i. emnA Friday and all strict
observers of church holidays make this
the climax of the penitential , moi,
which begins with Ash Wednesday. 40
days before Lent, and lastattll Bast-r
Sunday. Good ; Friday. ; comroeiuwi
tha a.- t ha Lord's ' crucifixion, be
comes a day of prayer and when this
day Is over many consider that Lent
has passed and no longer obaerVe their
Lenten vows.
Originally the one day of Friday was
observed as a day of fasting until cock
crow, the hour when the resurrection
wss believed to have taken place. Later
the fast was extended to 40 hours, the
length of time the JLonl lay in tn
tomb, and still later to a period of
40 days, the season of fasting and
temptation in the wilderness.. That is
tha origin of Lent. Now, after this
season of denial when social pastimes
and merriment are relinquished, and
strict observers deny themselves one
or more special things. Good Friday
comes as a climax with special serv
ices in the ritualistic churches.
The Thursday preceding Is known a
Maundy Thursday and used to be ob
served In remembrance ot the day when
the Lri'wanei tne apostles' reet. tn
Queen Elisabeth's time the English
monarch waahd . the - feet of as manr
poor, subjects as they were years old.
The water was mixed with sweet herbs
and after, washing the sign of the cross
was made on the feet and gifts were
presented to the people.
