FAVORS 3LULTN0MA1I
MAN FOR CONGRESS
Portland. April II To the Editor of
1 he journal i wian to say a word in
favor of electing a Multnomah man to
congress. I believe I know something
of the Importance of river improve
ment I nave been a shipbuilder for
JS years and have built over 20 steam
er" at Portland for Alaskan waters be
side others for Mexico and other coun
tries. I know George Shepherd will be
able to do some good If we send him to
congress by reason of his experience
In marine matters.
I have noticed with regret that when
the public starts to bund a boat or have
some nubile Improvement connected
with the water, often times the entire
commission la composed of men with
no knowledge of the work. We now
have a chance to send a man to con
gress who understands what we need,
so let us send him there.
JOSEPH 8UPPLE.
NAME POLICE CHIEF
TUESDAY PERHAPS
Candidates for appointment to the po
sition of chief of police and city engi
neer of St. Johns are still on the anx
ious seat, as Mayor J4. W. Brlee, chosen
to fill the position of chief executive
at the recent election, has not indicated
to whom the plums will fall.
The new city government has already
been Organised and the next regular
meeting of the council will be held next
Tuesday evening. It la possible at that
time that Mayor Brtce will announce
his appointments and It Is likely a
warm fight will develop, as certain
councilman may not care to Indorse the
appointees of the mayor.
