The strike is delaying the loading of
several vessels, but the exporters are
losing nothing thereby to speak of since
the charter parties contain a class
guarding against demurrage in case of
delay by strikes.

Word was received here this morning
that the North Pacific Steamship com
pany's steamer Roanoke, Captain Dun
ham, Is one of the vessels chosen to
escort Admiral' Evans' fleet to San
Francisco. She was chosen because of
her speed, which enables her to keep up
with the movements of the warships
even should they be given a little spurt
up the coast
The Roanoke plies regularly between
Portland and San Pedro, touching at
San Francisco and Eureka, and fortun
ately for her okners she happened to be
avaiiaDie to meet tne iieet. it is said
that she will easily be able to maintain
her schedule despite the loss of time

Ham Pitts was arrested here yestrerday
on the charge of obtaining money under
false pretenses. Forest Butcher is the
complainant and he says that more than
n month ago Pitts cams to him repre
senting himself to be an agent of the
Northern Motor Car company. He
bought a machine of Pitts, paying $60
down. After waiting a month for the
auto he had a warrant Issued for his
arrest Pitts denies intent to defraud.
