NO PLACE FOR TAES
TO SLEEP WHEN ON
LEAVE AT SAN DIEGO
(United PreM teased Wire.)
San Diego, April 16. Unable to find
Bleeping accommodations, nearly 100
sailors from the battleship fleet who
had been granted shone leave last even
ing, were compelled to tramp the
street all night The headquarters of
the committees were visited by a num
ber of warrant officers and men late at
night begging to be shown where they
might sleep, ' but only a few of them
were taken care. of.
"what will hatpen when over 6.000
men are ashore tonight?" asked the sail
ors this morning. The committee can
not answer. . -
Most of the men given shore leave
today will want to spend the night In
the city, and accommodations can be
found for "only-a small percentage of
ne numoer. . ,
The committees had arranaed for tha
Influx of visitors, but It never occurred
to them r that there would be such - a
demand for rooms by the sailors them
selves and they are confronted with a
serious problem. Hundreds of civilians,
who arrived on late trains and who had
failed to make reservations In advance.
also were compelled to walk the streets
all night
