DRY SOUTHLAND MAKES OREGON
LOOK BETTER THAN BEFORE
"Southern California T A beautiful
country, but too dry. Why, when one
Jrets up in the morning, it Is almost
ike having slept without the night; you
feel as if the sun had been shining
while, you slept", declared Adolphe
woiie. of unman. Wolfe. Co.. who
has returned from a southern vacation
trip. , He said a few whiffs of the Ore-
? oa osone : maae mm xeei more com
ortable as soon as ho had orossed back
to the north side of the Siskiyou moun
tains. . "'
It la said southern California has
been even drier than usual this spring.
The people there have been putting .up
supplications to - the tearless and un
feeling sky for weeks, and have been
mocked by its continuous and consecu
tive smile. It Is believed by Oregonians
who have visited there this spring that
southern California skies wear a smile
than won't come off. . ..
"Oregon Is the plans that suits me,"
said Mr. Wolfe. ,rI like this fresh. In-1
vlroratlng air we have around Portland.
When I get back here I appreciate it
more and more. I don't feel at home
anywhere else.
"Business conditions In southern Cal
ifornia are not the best. The tourist
business Is not rood. There Is not much
in that country excepting climate and
tourist travel, and when the tourists
don't come there is not so much doing
In commercial lines. Because of the
last year's money stringency eastern
people of large wealth are not traveling
so numerously to southern California re
sorts. The big hotels at Santa Barbara
and other points are running with but
a small cotens or guests."
Speaking Of San Francisco, hs said
the city was a different place and did
not make the same impression witn nsm,
He was struck with the strange new-
ness of everything, and there was not a
single spot In the business districts that
he recognized as the San Francisco of
old. He spent omy a aay mere.

her little feet battered a tattoo up the

throat attested to the sore throat and
her sobs to the broken'heart -
No one knew her wnen sne came in
and she carefully conoealed her name

Well, we- will take the eulture and

Then down the -steps and to the door,

broken. She had not been able to secure
the permit ana in sad it ion, she had
not been able to escape the health of fl

sobs. Scollard comforted her and as
sured her of hla good intentions, but
her heart could not understand. Her
young mind could grasp but one thing
and tier heart controlled her- mind.
Finally she told Scollard she lived at

home to her mother and Dr. Pohl would
come and visit her. - ; . .
This seemed to please the little miss,
and with her head held- high , and ber
feet stamping' triumphantly she moved
on her way home. She could not go to
