I TIDE OF IDLE MEN
TUENS TO THE N0BTH
(pedal JDbpateh te Tke Journal.)
Grants Pass, Or., April I. frelfht
trains from the south are carrying- from
SO to 100 men on the hurricane deck of
the freight cars. One hundred and fifty
men were dropped off here' from one
train, the crew having; been ordered to
carry the men no farther than Grants
rase. Mayor tsmitn objected, however.
to having so many unwelcome -guests
thrust -upon the city and -ordered them
on. Special police were called' and the
trainmen were forced to oroceed with
their load. Every train ta belnc watched
and gangs of men that crowd the cars
are compelled to move on.
Most or these men are on their way
to British Columbia and Alaska. Some
of them are professional hoboes, but
many are workinxmen out of emDlov
meni Bo large are the gangs that the
train crews are- not aoie to light them
on and are ooiigeu to transport them.
it is stated that -over l.voo Idle men are
now on their way north from Nevada
and southern California, and that these
will be pouring into Portland, Seattle
and other northern cities within the next
few weeks, very lew or them drop off
in aoutnern uregon as mere is not much
