A few dava ixa a gentleman came
Into Tom'a Dlace of business on Fifth
street and commenced to ifngle his coin
In a fashion that created the impression
that one of the Goulds had arrived In
town.' Hs Introduced himself to Stew
art and said that a very dear mutual
friend had told him to tell Tom all
about a rich mine In eastern Washing
ton which would make them aa im
mensely rich. At the same tlmes he
said that the "friend" had sent , as a
present to the genial Fifth street man
a bearskin mat was wortn auu.
"I'll bring it around in the morning,"
said the stranger, .
When the stranger sxniamea mat tne
mutual friend' was "Fergy" Ferguson of
Pendleton, Tom immediately - Decame
interested, t The stranger explained in
the minutest, detail thatV'Fergy'? t had
old out his business at Pendleton, go
ing Into eastern Washington, and finally
landing in a mining camp "flat broke. '
He also told of grubstaking the Pendle
tonlan and how "Fergy," by-hard work
and good luck, had opened a rich place
claim and was rapidly making an Im
mense fortuns. ' - :
"Fergy wants you to come and sea
him,", said the stranger. "He remem
bers some of the favors you have be
stowed upon him In the past and now
he Is going to renay you. - He will mt
all' your expenses and all you have to
do Is Jump on tho train with me, ridel
to eastern Washington, tske up your
claim and carry away millions in gold,
it won't cost you a cent.
"Well, so long! I must tiustle oft to
the hotel and get some sleep. I'll be
around about noon tomorrow with that
bearskin."
"That sounds good to me," soliloquised
Tom. '1 need a bearskin, too," said he,
"and I Will sea how this thins- comes
out." , - I
AM that night Tom dreamed of gold"! I
mines, oanic accounts, mansions in Firm
avenue, crlvate yaonts and private cara.
He came down early the next day and
waited for the messenger from wealth-

"Say, old . marr," 'shouted Tom glee
fully, "you can't guess what kind of
Jrood luck I've just tumbled into. Fergy
s up In the eastern Washington mines
and iias sent lor me to come up ana
make my everlasting fortune.
Feray's friend looked under his eye
brows, glanced toward the booby hatch
snd made a motion like a man about
to phone for the dippy ward.
"Fergy hasn't been outside of Pendle
ton for the Dast six months, to my per
sonal knowledce." heexclalmed
"wnat, ejacuiatea rom, -aian i ne
send me a bearskin and his messenger
to invite me out to his mines?"
The man from Pendleton began edg
ing toward the door, muttering under
his breath, "He's dopey." As his friend
made a desperate dash for the open air
Tom whistled meditatively and ' re
marked to himself
"Well, that gets my goat!"
Tom believes he narrowly escaped be
ing the victim of a clever swindle of
some kind. He Is still guessing what
would- have been his finish and his
friend from Pendleton still looks at him
With suspicion.
Now when you see Tom standing in
the doorway presumably sunning him-'
self he's simply In wait for that fellow
with the bearakin, and his hands behind
ms back clasp . a ' nerty biacktoorn.
