Aa' announced In yesterday's Journal
the ordinance granting aa appropriation
of f VE0 fr an arch of welcome to be
erected at Sixth and Hoyt atreeta for
the. Rose Festival , waa passed over
Mayor Ivans' b veto along with four other
ordlnanoea. The oouncll sustained the
mayor In but one veto. This was the
ordinance : for employment agencies
which Mayor Lane vetoed because It
discriminated against girls and woman
The council sustained the veto by
vote of six for the ordinance and eight
against.
Councilman DiiscoU's ordinance, pro
viding fines for miners who misrepre
sent their aaes to saloonkeepers in se
curing . intoxicating liquors was also
fiassed over the mayor's veto.' although
wo of the majority party, Councilman
Baker ana cellars votea witn tne mayor.
To offset this Councilman Cottel and
Concannon of the minority party, voted
in favor of the ordinance.
There was little discussion In passing
the veto ordinances save over the light
ing ordinance and the one granting a
strio of land to orooerty holders on B
moot street This latter caused a tilt
between Ma vor Lane and Councilman
Bennett. Bennett explained that the
property owners had already given a
strip of land equal to the one given In
return by the city and that the purpose
or tne ordinance was out to siraignien
the street Mayor Lane said there waa
nothing in the ordinance to show that
this was. true and Bennett replied that
he had just told the mayor about It. 1
"I know you did," replied Mayor Lane,
"but your unsupported word would not
suffice with me." . '
The council also passed tne ordinance
granting C. W. Nottingham permission
to erect a frame building within the
fire limits.

A man with $1,000,000 to spend In a
year and a man who would get, $7,000,
000 at the end of that year couldn't fall
to appeal to us as a hero. That was
quit enough to establlsn nim .firmly
in our affecUons. . t

The oast Is a large one and Is well
dressed and lively. Robert Ober plays
Monty Brewster, the millionaire hero
and stands up well under the strain. '
June Mathls, who plays the part of
"Peggy" Oray la attractive . and , th.e
others do very well under the circum
stances. . The stace settings were great
ly approved or. notably the scene on, the
deck cf Monty's steam yacht where the
party Is blown all about by a hurri
cane but where the , gallant skipper
steadfastly declines to take a reef in his
vails. The story is unintelligible but
noisy. It was told to capacity houses
last night and the outlook Is equally
good for the rest of the engagement
