What promises to be the biggest road
race ever rheld In the northwest will
take place ust outside of Portland dur
ing Rose Carnival week, and in addition
to a coterie of eastern speed demons
sent out by manufacturers, there will
be some of the fastest drivers in Cali
fornia, Washington and Oregon entered
In the contests. Rich prises will be put
on ior tne two races, one tor profes
sional drivers and the other ft- the
amateurs. - A committee - will lay out
the course, tomorrow or Baturoay. and
tne races will be for lOAmllea. '
It was definitely decided to hold the
race at the meeting of the board of di-
itxjiura lueaaay nifni. at wnicn time
R. W. inraan was elected president of
the club, to succeed Lewis Russell. The
otner orncers are Lewis Russell. Vice
president; will Lipman, secretary, and
ur. tj. n. isrowo, treasurer. Llpman
"jiti oruwa succeeaea tnemseives.
There Is an excellent course, covering
a distance of 18 miles, that the commit
tee nas in mind for the races. With
Moniavuie as the starting and finish
in- point, a -is mne lap can be bad by
pursuing this route: Montavllla south
about two miles to the Section Line
roaa; tnence on the Section line road
to uresnam, at Which point the cars
win cross to the Twelve Mile house;
two miles north, thence east ton the
Base Line road to the starting point at
juontaviiia. ,
Following the plan of the recent Sa
vannah, Georgia, road races, the auto-
mooiie ciud wiu ask uovernor Cham
berlain for full possession of the road
ror aoout rour noura on the afternoon
of one of the festival days. During that
ume no person win ne allowed on the
roaa, tne racers navmg undisputed
sway. '
Arrangements will be mads with the
xarmers in tne . vicinity to erect a
granasiana near Montavllla, so that
there will be some source of revenue
ior tne ciuo to reimburse it for Its ex
pense. The streetcar company will be
asked to provide special cars to carry
nm truirui 10 montaviiia, wnere tney
wu. oe.aroppea. a snort walk will
bring them' to the grandstand, which
win n niacea at ins starting point
'mat me meeting win be a success
there can be no doubt. The commutes
receivea a score or inquiries from
big eastern manufacturers relative to
the race, and It Is aulte likely that they
will send the fastest drivers in their
etnoloy. Owing to the fact that there
will be but. four sharp turns on the
course, some exceptionally fast time Is
expected. (
