A few daye ago Dr. Doran received
a letter bearing the postmark of Port.

found a postofftoe order for $42. that
being the amount due him with Interest
at per eent compounded. With the
oraer was a note telling Dr. Doran that
out In the weet good fortune had smiled
upon the young man who 10 years be
fore had been the recipient of his kind
ness. The bread cast upon the waters
had returned, even aa It waa taught

that had been ordered for a school In
Forest Grove, but waa unused. As thla
waa largely a dead loaa for the rural
ture dealer who had the etuff on hand,

sioners hesitated to spend so much, and
have delayed ' to await the results of
the bargain hunt The home la ready

WOMEN IN LINE TO VOTE ON
ALBINA HIGH SCHOOL BONDS
When the polls were opened to the
taxpayers of the Portland school dis
trict at 1 o'clock this afternoon, at the
city halL to vote to bond the district
for $260,000 for a new high school build,
lng in northeast Portland, a line had
formed extending from the doors of the
clerk's office around the corridors to
the elevators. As soon as the doors
were opened the voters passed Quickly
through the office of the clerk, and it
la estimated that several hundred per
sons had voted within half an hour.
It is expected that several thousand
taxpayers will take advantage of the
opportunity to vote before the nolle
close at 4 o clock. Many women were
In the line awaiting their turn to cast
their ballot. So far aa known there
is no opposition against the proposed
school, and it is expected that the vote
will be almost unanimously in favor of
tne proposition.

J. L. Peterson,' a longshoreman, waa
arrested shortly after midnight last
night for drunkenness. ' When he waa
released from the city jail this morning
he declared his belief that his wife had
committed suicide by throwing herself
In the river.- He eald they had started
out to get drunk together last nlaht but
he could not remember what had become
of the woman after the orgy had
progressed to the point where he waa
noapacuated by reason or his potations.
About an hour after leaving the
prison Peterson returned bearing his
wife's picture. This he gave to the
police to aid them in the search he de
sired made for her. The picture and a
description of. the woman were take
and Peterson was warned to keep away
from the station or he would be again
locked up for drunkenness.
