"l" antana" waa written for no other
purpose than to make one forget and
forgive the sordid world. Its mission Is
accomplished successfully In the hands
of the San Francisco company. It Is a
laugh all the way through, with extra
hitches here and there. The music is
the kind that makes th gallery lips

Baker "A Trip to Chinatown.
"A Trip to Chinatown" proved to be a
very entertaining ort of chestnut at the
Baker yesterday. It wasn't at all be
cause of the farce, for whil th Hoyt
lines were being recited and the Hoyt
situations dragged out for Inspection
your taugnter never grew boisterous, it
was entirely because Miss Maribel Sey
mour ana James uieason had a very
funny vaudeville burlesque "scream
ingly- runny as our vaudeville friends
would say. It shed a positive radiance-
on me ariernoon s penormance made
you glad yon had come and sorry that
Miss Seymour doesn't do more of tht
sort or thing.
Serious work isn't Miss Seymour's
forte. And for too manv weeks to think
about she has either been doing serious
work or worse. But yesterday she came
out "In Vodevllle" end we rejoiced and
were alad. It is her own comooaition.
She and Mr. Gleason are bell ringers,
Japaneae acrobats, sleight of hand per
formers end various other familiar va
riety people In turn. They are funnnier
as the Japanese. Both come out in ab
surd cotton kimonos, Miss Seymour
with sn obvious hoisting wire fastened
to a belt around her waist. At the word
GJeaaon throws her up on his shoulders,
where she dances and pirouettes like a
monkey on a bamboo pole.- A toy fish
net is tnen lata at Mr. uieason s feet and
ene uantiv descends into its roids.
. Mr. Oleason's imnersonationa ara also
funny, especially the Sousa one, where
he smilingly points out each medal for
the benefit of those, who may not have
noticed an.
There are nearly a dosen musical
numbers In the performance which are
the worK or Miss Seymour, but they do
not com up to th "Vodevllle" niece,
which Is delightful, Mosttof them arc
given by the kindergarten. There are
several new faces in the kindergarten
this week first time on any stage, and
In spite of Miss Seymour's careful work
there were a good many wobbling knees.
The regular members of the company
did their usual work there waa noth
ing extraordinary about it on way or
the other. William Dills played Welland
Strong, the near-dead lunger, Elsie Har
rett sang two or three specialty songs
pretty well and poor Miss Kent had to
appear again in a ballet costume. But
because of the -Seymour stunts this
